To be surprised am I not losing weight?

I am very overweight.

A few weeks ago I decided to cut out all the awful food I'd been eating (chocolate, carbs like White bread, rice pasta potatoes and so on).

Week 1I lost half a stone, Great. I was really pleased.

Last week I lost a pound.

I'm halfway through the week now and I've lost nothing.

I'm eating fairly well I think - yesterday I had boiled eggs and salad, fruit during the day, and chilli with steamed veg in the evening.

Today I've had 2 ryvitas with low fat hummus and a couple of light babybels, fruit, and steak/salad for dinner.

I'm not sure why I'm not losing, if I only had a stone to lose I wouldn't be so concerned, but I have over 5st to shift and was expecting to lose 3-4lb a week at least, certainly at first.

I don't know what to do. I've done nothing different than in the first week really.

You just keep going! Even 1lb a week is almost 4 stone in a year.

shouldistop · 30/10/2021 20:51

Look at it another way, you've lost 8lbs in a few (3?) weeks - that's great!

shouldistop · 30/10/2021 20:52

Drink lots of water and try to get some exercise in too.

maffhew · 30/10/2021 20:53

You're not eating enough in my opinion. Your body has gone into starvation mode and is holding onto all the extra fat stores. The weight you lose in the first week is mainly water then you will lose at a steadier rate.

I know it's tempting to cut out everything and eat little for quick results but it doesn't work and isn't sustainable.

If you are committed to losing weight then aim to lose 1/2 lbs a week. I know that sounds rubbish but in the long term it will ensure you keep it off without being starving, miserable and denying yourself all the nice things. And as you've seen, that doesn't give instant results anyway!

Good luck.

Fatflump · 30/10/2021 20:55

The thought of taking another year from now (IF I lose a pound a week) to still be more than a stone away from my correct weight is so depressing.

I'm really trying and it just feels pointless 😥 Like I said this week I've not lost anything.

ShinyMe · 30/10/2021 20:55

Are you exercising?

Piggy42 · 30/10/2021 20:56

Could it be hormones? I weigh more before my period.

Fatflump · 30/10/2021 20:58

I already drink 2l of water.

I'm too heavy to do much exercise at the moment, I was intending to go back to the gym once id lost a stone -I was expecting that to be in a couple more weeks but at this rate it'll be after Xmas.

Look at your weight loss over a month and it'll probably average out. I find the weeks I've been a Saint I don't loose anything like I expect but weeks I relax a tiny bit I seem to loose more, but think it just equals out over a month.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 30/10/2021 20:59

Your body is not in starvation mode you just have an unrealistic expectation of weight loss and the speed it comes off. It's not a linear process. Some weeks there'll be no change on the scales and then you'll suddenly drop 3lbs.

Make sure you're drinking lots of water.

itsutterlyshit · 30/10/2021 21:00

How often are you weighing yourself?
Where you are in your monthly cycle can effect weight loss due to water retention etc. don't be disheartened. 8lb in only a few weeks is a great loss it can take your body time to adjust to your new life style.

Are you taking not of calories? Make sure you eat enough and aren't starving yourself also make sure you're drinking plenty.

Aria2015 · 30/10/2021 21:01

Where are you in your cycle? I've lost over 3 stone this year and the week running up to and starting my period I nearly never lose anything. I actually it skip that weigh in now as I found it demotivating. The other weeks I can lose up to 3 lbs if I stick to eating clean and exercise.

LadyCampanulaTottington · 30/10/2021 21:01

It takes months for this to happen not weeks.

Cut out as many carbs as you can including fruit and Ryvita. Carbohydrates are not required, eat mainly protein with some fat and low carb.

I’ve been doing Protein Priority Diet, eating this way, and I’m losing about 4lbs a week. I’ve lost 30 pounds since August.

It took me almost 3 years to lose 50lbs. But I've kept it off for over 18 years now. It's worth it, and if you manage it in in just over a year, I for one am impressed! Keep going, chipping away at it 😊
ShinyMe · 30/10/2021 21:02

Exercise doesn't have to mean gym sessions and full on workouts. Even just walking a little bit more, or doing some weights at home for a few minutes a day can help.

Crunchiedelight · 30/10/2021 21:03

You aren’t in starvation mode, no such thing. Are you tracking calories?

If you are consistently in a deficit, you will continue to lose fat, though it is rarely linear. It is very normal to lose some, plateau, spike, lose some more. As long as over the weeks your trajectory is going down you are doing great.

Danikm151 · 30/10/2021 21:03

Even going for a brisk walk is exercise. Don’t out it off. You are probably capable of more than you think 🙂 it doesn’t need to be at the gym.

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 30/10/2021 21:03

Are you due on? I find that makes a difference.

Terminallysleepdeprived · 30/10/2021 21:03

As above, you are effectively going from overeating to starving yourself. Your body needs to adjust slowly. You need to amend your thinking op sorry (and I say that as someone who has about 4st to lose). You are moving from one unhealthy relationship with food to another.

You need to be on at least 1200 calories but depending on your original intake I would start at 1500 and reduce every week to slowly adjust down to 1000-1200

Exercise in small bursts, start with walking to the end of the road, round the block and build up to longer. It will help.

Walk up and down the stairs in the ad breaks on TV, look at the fiton app, I have downloaded it this week after being recommended by a friend. Not started yet but looks good

Crunchiedelight · 30/10/2021 21:04

And you don’t need to cut carbs at all Hmm

tiredanddangerous · 30/10/2021 21:04

You are losing weight Confused

Dacquoise · 30/10/2021 21:05

Join a slimming club to motivate and support you. There is no quick fix for weight loss and slow and steady is best. Also sounds like you've drastically cut down on your eating which may becomeunsustainable long term. I use MyFitnessPal to count calories and do 10,000 steps a day, managed to lose stone and a half in twelve weeks but it was the weekly weigh in that kept me on the straight and narrow. You can do this but it will take time and there will be frustration.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 30/10/2021 21:05

Make sure you're not looking for an excuse to pack it all in because you're annoyed with the scales. Self-sabotage is a sure fire way to get yourself back to square one.

Branleuse · 30/10/2021 21:09

Its half a week. I think you should chill. Weight loss goes in fits and starts. Also weight loss is only one small reason for eating healthily and moderatly. Its your general health and wellbeing too, so try not to focus on the scales.

Theartexhouse · 30/10/2021 21:09

I think it sounds totally normal.

I calorie count, sometimes religiously other times not so well. But over time I’ve lost around 3 stone (I’ve had pregnancy’s in between). You have to just keep ploughing on and it’ll come off.
