To wonder why we ignore South American counties

Initially thought to raise under covid but in general we do not focus on South America as a continent nearly as much as we do Africa. Likewise countries in South America are as diverse and varied as those in Africa.

Covid is decimating South American countries. We may feel that the unwise decisions of Bolsinaro in Brazil and him being right wing allow us to smugly pass by, but the devastation by covid there and following on from Zika (which did affect the rest of the world so too bad). The poverty in many countries. The effect of a rampant Marxist government in Venezuela.

Is it because the language is not English? Is there a flagellant guilt in some about former colonialism or opportunities to atone for slavery which ended hundreds of years ago?

I've read a lot of news about how badly covid is affecting Brazil in particular?

It's because we don't have former colonial connections I think.
If you look down the foreign-born population of the UK there's well over a million residents from various African nations, and far more if you include their UK-born children, but hardly any from South America.
