Sorry. I know it's not an AIBU but this is driving my anxiety nuts.

Please can anyone identify this bug? (UK). This is taken with a macro lense. It's actually about 2mm prehaps. Will appreciate guesses as well as knowledgeable replies.

Carpet beetle?

Wrenna · 29/10/2021 21:32

Pill bug? The ones that roll themselves in little balls? Harmless (and cute IMO!)

Marelle · 29/10/2021 21:34

Carpet beetle larva. You need to call an exterminator.

Somanysocks · 29/10/2021 21:38

Ooh it's got eyelashes I'd kill for.

Buzzoffbug · 29/10/2021 21:52

I had a feeling it was carpet beetle larva.

Is it at all possible to treat myself? Any recommendations from anyone who's had them before? I really really cannot afford pest control. I've not long taken out a loan to afford major work to my car 😩

Agree on Carpet beetle larva. Vacuum a lot, empty the vacuum every time, cross your fingers.

Boobicoosg · 29/10/2021 22:10

How many of them have you seen? If it’s just one or two, kill, vacuum, spray, hopefully you won’t find anymore.

AtomicSquirrel3 · 29/10/2021 22:12

Carpet beetle larvae. Hoover everywhere, wash everything. Get some diatomaceous earth (food grade). Sprinkle it onto the carpet and rub it in. Leave on for as long as you can before hoovering off. It will dehydrate the bugs once they touch the powder and they slowly die.

I've found three so far in the past couple days. I'm going to deep clean the area tomorrow & pray I can catch it before it becomes a huge issue (if it hasn't already Sad )

I've heard you can use Indorex. It's actually a flea spray but it's a good insecticide and persists for months. Give a really big squirt to inside your vacuum cleaner before you start so anything that ends up in there dies...

Thank you for the tips and help. It's honestly much appreciated. Looks like that's my weekend planned!

We have these occasionally and still have never noticed any holes in the carpet. Bizarrely I’ve found more than half of them in the bathroom and there’s nothing in there to eat. Even if you get rid they can still fly in through the window so I’ll Chuck them outside if I spot one but other than that I don’t worry overly about them.

TattySlippers · 29/10/2021 23:08

Set off a smoke bomb. They kill all unwanted critters. You’ll find them at all good pet shops (whether you have a pet or not). Set it off, leave the house for a few hours, return….. all is good. Try it.
