I had a blood test a month ago. Ferritin was showing as 6.

Taken ferrous fumerate for a month and had repeat blood test.
Ferritin is now 21.
B12 is now 119!!!! I’m in so much pain I feel like someone is persistently stabbing me in the legs. I go dizzy everytime I stand up. Dr says it’s “low end of normal”.

Can I insist on trying the injections now??? AIBU to make an appointment and tell them I’m barely functioning and can’t even manage 16 hours a week at work now?? I’m so sick of this

U.K. ‘normal’ range for B12 is higher than other countries I believe. Germany sell hydroxocobalamin OTC & people self inject over there. I know pre brexit we could buy it from there to be shipped here but not sure if you can now. There are so many people over here who would benefit but can’t get their Drs to agree, it’s shocking.

I would request it in your shoes, our lab print ‘normal range but consider replacement if symptomatic’ on blood test results if B12 is low end of normal, did you see a print out of your blood test results?

What do the pains feel like? I get lower leg pain, but like a pulsating band around the top of my calf - never thought it could be B12 related!

I couldnt get doctor to prescribe so go private. 30 pounds an injection. Needed 2 the 1st month then 1 a month fir a few months now i just go when feel low

StormyTeacups · 28/10/2021 19:03

Have they discussed trying an oral b12 first?

I have an injection 8 wkly, when there was a hiatus during lockdown we got a 3 month kit from a cosmetic surgery?

Theforest · 28/10/2021 19:13

I started on injections with 134. Why won't they give you any?

NeverChange · 28/10/2021 19:21

I'm not a doctor and I know the ranges differ in land and countries but I would consider 119 lower than the lower range of normal.

Lowest I had was 130 & then I was a dysfunctional zombie so I empathise.

I find drinking tonic water helps with my legs. Doesn't eliminate it but takes the edge off.

So much mis information here, UK is the worst country for treatment of B12 deficiency

We allow it to drop far too low in this country compared with the rest of the world not the other way round!

Below 500 permanent nerve damage starts to occur, at your level you’re at risk of cauda equina, stocking and glove nerve damage of the arms and legs etc

If your folate level is low you may not be able to absorb and breakdown B12 In your blood stream (methylation) did they even check that? They are co-factors and require each other for absorption

Have they identified why your B group vitamins are low? It’s a classic sign of malabsorption, did they check your Vit D levels too?

Please get correct information from people who understand and know what they are telling you, PASOC is an excellent charity supporting people with pernicious anaemia and B12 deficiency

I just don’t understand the hesitation in GPs giving out B12 injections. Surely they can see you are suffering 😡

My reading a year ago was 109 and started them. Ever so thankful. GPs need to take sufferers seriously as the long term effects of B12 damage is irreversible.

Be persistent

SweetMaryHell · 28/10/2021 21:11

Folate was 13.2

@StormyTeacups

What misinformation is on here?
That’s what I was wondering but I assume from this We allow it to drop far too low in this country compared with the rest of the world not the other way round! that pp misread when I was saying U.K. normal range is higher than in other countries -as in we let it fall a lot lower than other countries before we mark it abnormal 🤷🏼‍♀️
