Going to the shops today (30 mph road) and a cat shot out straight in front of my car..(breaked quickly and avoided the poor cat) but its got me wondering what I would have done if I had hit the poor cat, injuring or even killing the poor animal 😢 I am still shaking! I would of course have taken it straight to the vet if injured but what do you do if the poor animal was killed ? Would I have had to phone the police? If not what?

No you don't need to phone the police. You should still take a cat to the vet if killed so they can check if it's microchipped and notify the owner.

No you wouldn't need to ring the police. Take to the the vets who can scan for microchip to find owners. A lot of cats aren't chipped though.

I hit a cat once. I was driving on a busy road. The cat ran across a three lane road (2 lane on opposite side). Cat avoided the car coming opposite direction and ran directly into my path. I slammed on the breaks but it hit my bumper (at a pretty low speed at that point). I stopped but the cat had run off into the hedge row next to me!! With a young child (not my own child) in the car and being a busy road I couldn't get out to hunt for the cat. It was in a time before social media so I couldn't post anything about it either! I do hope the cat got home okay. I hope cos I mentioned to practically stop when it hit my bumper, it might of been okay.

I cried for hours and hours! But these things happen! It probably lived in surrounding fields and main road is busy and fast!

No, you don't need to ring the police (you would if you had killed a dog).

You also do not have to stop and collect the cat, and especially should not do so if it is not safe / you'd cause a hazard on the road. It's a nice thing to do to take the dead cat to the vet if you are able.

You'd have to phone the police if you hit a dog.
