To take DD back to a&e

11mo DD was seen in a&e on Thursday afternoon with a fever and swollen lymph nodes. She was given antibiotics as it was thought to be caused by a localised skin infection. She’s been on the drugs since Thursday evening and is still spiking fevers. 40.2 this morning. I’ve just given her ibuprofen and am waiting for it to come down a bit before I try to get her in the car. Surely she should be feeling better by now if the antibiotics were working?

I would if she’s still hitting 40 odd with drugs. Normally they say they’re not worried about the temp itself but when my little one was at 41 despite calpol they were concerned about the temp itself in A&E and took us straight up to paeds.

Really glad you’ve taken her back OP. They’ll get her sorted. Hope you’re doing ok too, it’s hard for parents too especially when they’re as young as your daughter is. You’ll feel better once she’s checked out.

Hope she’s ok. You e definitely done the right think taking her back with such a high temperature. Wishing her a speedy recovery.

I thought that you should use calpol for temperature rather than ibuprofen?

@Couldhavebeenme3 I was always told this too but last time I saw a doctor with my 4 year old he said ibuprofen is better for high temperature. They maybe changed it in past few years

It's horrible when they are so unwell especially when so little!

We’ve been alternating as per doctor’s instructions.

She’s got an infected lymph node. IV antibiotics for at least 24 hours. We’re in a nice ward with a private room. Not what I had planned for my Sunday but never mind!

Oh it's good that she's getting IV antibiotics.

@offmyfence Still spiking temperatures. Got a big mass under her jaw. Waiting for an ENT review and scan still. Talk from medical consultant of potentially needing drainage or surgery if antibiotics don’t start shrinking it soon. Depends on the blood cultures and what the infection is. She’s fairly happy most of the time, just gets a bit grouchy. Thankfully her covid swab was negative so we’re allowed into communal areas and can have visitors so I’ve been released by DM to go and have a coffee and get some fresh air.
