Men knowing better

Perhaps I'm being unreasonable and a tad touchy

We live in what will be the new ULEZ on Monday. We live about 20 metres inside the new zone. Cameras and signs have gone up but oddly inside the zone rather than outside it to say Entering ULEZ (or similar)

I was questioning with my OH why "they" would do this. Surely the signs should be that you are entering the ULEZ, not signalling when you exit it. The signs actually say that you are entering the ULEZ (wrongly)

I am apparently misinformed. Despite the fact that we sold his van for being ULEZ non-compliant and bought a new(ish) car to comply - we are no longer in the ULEZ. Why? Because "the man who put it up" told him.

We live within the ULEZ boundary. The boundary is at the end of our road. But now that "the man" told him that the ULEZ starts out from the South/North Circular, I must have it wrong. I have shown him maps. I have shown him the (limited) communication from our local councils/TFL/etc on this. But I am wrong because the man who put the camera up knows better. Because I am a woman who has only lived in this house for 20 years and knows where the fucking South Circular is

As an aside - I have also been told off by my family for being annoyed at this. I should know my place and being told constantly that I am wrong because men know better is something I am not allowed to be annoyed about

AIBU?

I must be missing something, but unless it's a one-way street there should surely be both "you are entering" and "you are leaving", depending which side you're coming from?

It is a one way street. You shouldn't be able to enter our street from the South Circular. No Entry

Sorry I didn't make that clear. It's a one way street . Which feeds onto the south circular

The cameras and signs are up when you leave our one way street and enter the "free zone"

But the signs say you say entering the ULEZ. But the point is - I'm being told I'm wrong about where the ULEZ is. Because a man told him otherwise

The signs are wrong. But the Man knows better

Sorry - to respond properly - it should say "you are leaving" but doesn't. I think they've messed it up but Man says otherwise

Meh OH likes to argue about stupid things a lot. Especially after a pint. I think the last one was about how many zeros in one million. I was wrong, because reasons. 99% I don't engage and just shoo him away. If I'm in a good mood I'll argue till the cows come home ,with proof until he sheepishly admits he might possibly be wrong.

Tbh , I don't really care anyways as I know I'm right and keep thinking/doing things my way.Grin

The might be a man, but I'm awfully stubborn.

It was after a or (or 6) , Thank you for the perspective! Normally I would shoo but tonight just pissed me off. Tomorrow I'll get the "shall I leave" which will be followed by "whatever you like" but glad to know it's not just me!

Sympathy OP, I had an ex like this. Every single time I would tell him something he didn't know before, something I'd read or seen on the news, he would scoff and call me a liar.

Then when I would see him a few days later, every single time he would say, "you'll never guess what (male best friend) told me" and repeat whatever I'd said back at me Angry when I would say, "I told you that the other day," he would deny it completely, insist it was the male friend who told him, and call me a liar and jealous. Utterly bizarre behaviour.

I know that doesn't help you, but solidarity.

lottiegarbanzo · 23/10/2021 23:58

Man who would rather talk rubbish than admit he might be wrong, takes as gospel the words of another man who would rather talk rubbish than admit he might be wrong.

You'd think that self-knowledge would buy him insight, so the gift of doubt. But no. Face is more important than facts, to him, to his ignorant friend and so on down the chain of ignorance. The face and social standing of men he does not know, over that of a woman he knows and claims to love.

Explains a lot (extrapolating the point to society at large) about the low conviction rate for rape and other offences against women.

This could replace entire history lessons.

daimbarsatemydogsbone · 24/10/2021 08:38

OP so you are inside the South Circular?

daimbarsatemydogsbone · 24/10/2021 08:57

Sorry ignore my daft Q I get it now and sorry focusing on the wrong thing. I bet there was a woman somewhere who told the men in charge they needed to order some different signs or they would be wrong but the men overruled her.

PostcodeJack · 24/10/2021 09:14

Yep, sorry if I wasn't clear. We are inside the South Circular. OH now adamant that the ULEZ starts when we exit our road and get onto the South Circular (the only way out of our road)

It's quite common for misteks to be made. I noticed all the bus timetables at the bus stop were for the other stop on opposite side of road (one was to the city the other was from the city ). I let the bus company know and they sorted it. The odds of it being a bloke who made that mistake ?
= 99% + Hmm

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 24/10/2021 10:18

That kind of shit really makes my blood boil.

I could understand this had we not been talking about it for the last year. And bought a new car. And sold his van. But now random stranger means that I (and tfl and the mayor) are all wrong and we are outside the zone

We had a chat about our shed. Last week we had a fox who couldn't get down the side of it,(it got out eventually) I went to look and shed is leaning there is a smaller shed behind which is stopping it from collapsing.
So yesterday I told dh the shed is leaning cue "no it's not you don't know what you're talking about" we went to look and guess who was right? He just went quiet, why can't they admit when they are wrong and we are right?

honeylulu · 24/10/2021 11:39

I've pieced together what you are saying and I agree that your interpretation makes perfect sense and the sign must be wrong. The map says your property is inside the ULEZ and the south circular isn't. The south circular leads out of London so makes no sense if SC is in ULEZ and area closer to central London (your road) is not. So the sign in your one way road ought to be "leaving" not "entering", just like you said. The Man is wrong!

Tomorrow I'll get the "shall I leave" which will be followed by "whatever you like" but glad to know it's not just me

You should verify if he is asking shall he leave the ULEZ and if so that he's accepting he's already in it!!!

honeylulu · 24/10/2021 11:51

And yes I get this "know it all" stuff from my husband sometimes too. It infuriates me when I say I have measured an area where we planned to put something and it's actually not big enough so we'll have to rethink. The first thing he'll do is snatch the tape measure off me and go and measure again himself.

Or not listen to what I'm saying about an issue we have with a water pipe for example (seems to be leaking but in a concealed area outside before it enters the house). I'll say I've called Thames Water for advice and requested one of their free leak checks so we will have a better idea of what to do. Suddenly he'll snap out of half-listening and say irritably "we'll we can't just leave it. We ought to contact Thames Water and see if they can do anything to help." ... When I'd not only thought of that, I'd actually done it! I snapped at him at that point and was told I was rude and aggressive, but it's SOOO annoying. And when TW do come round he will have convinced himself that I only requested the visit because he "told me" to! Arrrgghh!!!

AccidentallyOnPurpose · 24/10/2021 11:54

@PostcodeJack how is he in day to day life and not being all pickled brained?

I put up with OH because day to day he is sensible enough, does listen to my opinion, knows and admits I'm clever and that in many cases I do know best. So the occasional drunk , "omg how do you get out of bed in the morning " dumb moments , even if rage inducing are not enough to overshadow the rest of it.

ChargingBuck · 24/10/2021 12:13

so the gift of doubt. But no

@lottiegarbanzo I always enjoy & often admire your posts.
But this one ... just made me laugh til my eyes leaked. And I don't even have to live with a man anymore.

Never will again either - can't be arsed with the oblivious entitlement & baffling inability to hear anything a woman says.

SisterMichael · 24/10/2021 12:14

Can we have a diagram please?

PS I’d be furious too!
