Hi everyone, am a mom of two a 16 year old and a 6 year old. For the pass 6years I have been home with the kids, last year my husband and I were trying to have another child up to the start of this year, but nothing happens, so I give up and decide to look for a job, I was successful and started on the 1st of this month. Just to cut the store shortly, I took a pregnancy test yesterday and its positive. I still can't wrap my head around this. The timing is just off.
Did this ever happen to anyone? Should I fell bad

I wouldn’t feel bad. I imagine you’ll be working with them for at least another 5-6 months before mat leave so you’re not going to be disappearing straight away.

NavigatingAdolescence · 23/10/2021 19:41

Depending on how pregnant you are you may not be eligible for statutory maternity pay.

AutumnLeafy · 23/10/2021 20:09

Don't feel bad. It's just nature.

Basicbitch40 · 23/10/2021 20:14

Lucky you.

Whstdoyouthink · 23/10/2021 20:16

Meh, maternity leave is a short period of time in the grand scheme of things (although longer if you take 6 years).

It’s great to have employment on your CV

Congratulations

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 23/10/2021 20:17

Don’t plan your life around what works best tor your employer- it happens, congratulations

GoingOutOutNEVER · 23/10/2021 20:19

I started a job on 2nd Aug and I fell pregnant early October..does happen. I told my line manager and they were fine and then I told HR when after 12 week scan. No point worrying about what X will say. Congratulations

Beseen22 · 23/10/2021 20:31

Happened to my SIL. They tried for years and she switched jobs and got pregnant immediately. She qualified for stat maternity pay but there is very tight criteria and it was a matter of days. If you don't qualify for that you will qualify for maternity allowance. She had worked there 7 years now and is an absolute asset to them, a maternity leave is so minimal in the length of a career.

I tried for 2.5 years then left to retrain and study and of course got pregnant 6 months later. I couldn't be happier for thr derailment and o months later i went straight back to it. Obviously it can affect you financially but as you weren't employed before you wouldn't have gotten anything anyway.

I started a new job at the end of June last year, found out I was pregnant end of August. I told my manager straight away as I had bad morning and motion sickness and was allowed to work from home right up until my maternity leave in April.
I'm due to go back end of Dec/beginning of Jan 2022 but I've fell pregnant again and will be going on maternity leave beginning of April once again😂

I don't feel bad at all, you don't really owe the company anything so it kind of is what it is. Congratulations and tell them once you feel ready, you don't have to tell them anytime soon anyways.
You may not qualify for SMP though so look into that when you can

kiss16 · 23/10/2021 21:13

Thank you guys, you all make me fell so much better

I started a new job and fell pregnant a couple of weeks later. I worked for 9 months before I went on mat leave. I still qualified for SMP, just!

NavigatingAdolescence · 23/10/2021 21:59

As long as you aren’t pregnant when you start work, you’re fine. If you’re pregnant before you start, you won’t be.

dotmckee · 23/10/2021 22:07

Started a new job on the Monday, found out I was pregnant on the Saturday. I was delighted, we had been trying for 16mths by that point. Because we had been trying for a while, I knew (and tested) as soon as I was late which is still very early in the pregnancy. I didn't tell my boss until after the 12 week scan, which was in my 2nd ever 1:1 with him. I was very nervous but actually they were very supportive. Due to my continuous service I qualified for maternity pay and took the full year off. I am now back at work and it feels like I have barely been away.
Good luck with your pregnancy and your decisions around work, hope everything turns out well for you

Spunout · 23/10/2021 22:11

I was exactly the same, was in new job a fortnight and test came up positive,I kept quiet till the 12 week scan then had to tell them so they'd allow the time off,not ideal but xanthe be helped,I only had maternity allowance from dwp though as wasnt working long enough for smp.

BrilliantBetty · 23/10/2021 22:11

Happened to me too. Year+ of TTC, got and new job and bam!

I waited until 18 weeks to tell them. By that point I had made a good impression and they new I was a hard worker who cared about the job. They welcomed me back after mat leave & all fine. It wasn't awkward at all apart from the initial disclosing.

How do you feel about the pregnancy, happy?

BrilliantBetty · 23/10/2021 22:13

*knew

kiss16 · 23/10/2021 22:38

Am still wrapping my head around it, am not sure if am happy, but am not angry, I no it sound confusing. Nevertheless am not planning to tell my bosses anytime soon cause its really early.

I'm planning to retake the test just to be sure. My husband doesn't know as yet. He will be smiling from ear to ear.
