Cleaning worktops (grease etc), meths, white spirit, turps

I've got the standard worktops that have been around since 1990's if not before, the ones with laminate over chipboard. Can I use any of the above to get grease etc off or will they damage them?

I use bicarb. Put it on with some water and leave for a bit, then wash off.

Can’t you just use hot water and washing up liquid? Cuts through grease in no time, are you talking 30y of grease?

Gothot · 22/10/2021 22:00

Thanks for the duropal link, I'll try meths and bicarb if meths doesn't work. I only have eco washing liquid and it doesn't work. It is quite old, thick grease. Thanks xx

Wouldn't it make more sense to use something meant for removing grease without removing varnish/laminate and becoming highly flammable? Like Sugar Soap?

monkeysox · 22/10/2021 22:14

Sugar soap.

monkeysox · 22/10/2021 22:16

@Gothot we had to dig out a rental and had loads of grease to shift that works

Mucky1 · 22/10/2021 22:22

Elbow grease spray! Quick spray leave for 10 mins and the grease will just wipe off.

Kernowfornia · 22/10/2021 22:36

If you’ve got more than the worktop to do I second elbow products too. elbowgreasecleans.com/

mogsrus · 22/10/2021 22:48

Dishwasher tablet in warm water, dissolve,& put in spray bottle. What is the job of a wash tablet ? to eat grease

UninspiredUsername1 · 22/10/2021 22:56

Another vote for elbow grease spray! That shit works like magic!

Shmithecat2 · 22/10/2021 23:02

Sugar soap..it's bloody marvellous.

Gothot · 23/10/2021 02:00

Thanks, sugar soap sounds ok and elbow grease spray sounds interesting. Can't wait to reclaim that bit of worktop! Mumsnet sorts me out once again.

One of my friends moved into a new house last week and the top of the kitchen cupboards were inches thick with grease and had clearly never been cleaned.
I sprayed elbow grease, left it for 15 minutes. Then scraped the grease off with a spoon. Such a satisfying job

FluffyBooBoo · 23/10/2021 08:09

The pink stuff paste is amazing. I use it on my oven and it cleans the baked on grease really really. And it costs less than a quid usually.

Was just going to suggest this, this is the only spray cleaner I use in my kitchen. You can spray it on and literally watch the grease dissolve!
