Positive thread about life in England

My family is about to relocate back to the UK after over a decade on the continent. It’s for work reasons, and to be closer to family. In a lovely part of the UK. I’m fluctuating between excited and despairing - the situation seems so bad over there at the moment from what I see in the news (I.e on MN Smile). Brexit, Covid cases, NHS crisis. Some days I wonder what the hell we’re thinking and others I can’t wait to come back for gorgeous British walks and pub lunches. Can you share what you find positive about life in the UK right now?

Objectively, anyone who is entitled to live in a safe, democratic, developed European country which has universal healthcare and where the rule of law is taken seriously should count their blessings. That’s why so many less fortunate people are literally prepared to risk their lives to get here.

The U.K. may not be quite as fantastic a place to live as France, Germany, the Netherlands or the Scandinavian countries, and the NHS is far from adequate, but it’s still one of the best countries in the world, especially if you choose somewhere which has affordable housing and decent weather.

Are you on benefits? Do actually know anyone on benefits? Because I'm going to share a very disturbing thought with you. A lot of people around here voted for Brexit. Even more disturbingly for you, plenty weren't even white. I do understand that they will be the wrong kind of poor for you, thinking unacceptable things, and not appreciating your boundless pity for them.

Honestly, if you hate the UK and are not in a position to move to another country, all you can do is get involved in the things that you care about and try to achieve what you consider to be positive change.

@ILoveAllRainbowsx. So what if many of us think it was a very stupid decision and are ‘remainers’ — it’s hardly a roaring success. On the other hand it feels very civilised here. By the way I went to Malmo a week ago- a quick hop and skip from us across the oresund Bridge— it has its grim areas but to be frank I would take it over most of the UK any day— Not at all what you would think if you believe the press— as I said above the UK has things I miss but the idea any of us who think it’s not ‘worldbeating’ is because we are all ‘ renainers’ isn’t the case, it’s because we’ve got current comparisons

I know they voted for Brexit. Because they were lied to and were promised change. Let’s not kid ourselves that anyone got what they wanted after Brexit.
MarshaBradyo · 22/10/2021 22:15

People on here are negative because they are mainly remainers and they still find it difficult to accept that we voted leave.

Maybe this is true sometimes, I have no idea, but to say I voted remain and I enjoy it here

Theythinkitsalloveritisnow · 22/10/2021 22:15

Sorry that's for @Pumperthepumper thread's moving quickly! I'm not going to get involved in any more discussion with you because this is distracting from a lovely, positive thread Smile

Theythinkitsalloveritisnow · 22/10/2021 22:19

@Pumperthepumper actually one last thing, please don't do that middle class lefty thing of saying Brexit voters were lied to, but, unlike you, didn't have the intelligence to see through it. It's so arrogant and patronising.

Sxxyfing · 22/10/2021 22:19

Honestly if you have a choice why would you live here?!

BlueFlavour · 22/10/2021 22:20

It’s not claustrophobic. Fewer expectations on you.

RolloTomassi · 22/10/2021 22:20

So many things, all covered already.

For me the two that sprung to mind are the beautiful countryside, and the sense of humour. There's always a shared "bantz" that most of us seem to get, even when the chips are down.

Theythinkitsalloveritisnow · 22/10/2021 22:21

Where would you choose to go?

It’s not intelligence, it’s desperation. People who have nothing to lose always vote for change. Please don’t be so patronising and arrogant to think that because you’re alright Jack, everyone else is too.

BlueFlavour · 22/10/2021 22:22

Less corruption too.
I’ve never bribed anyone in the UK. I have in other countries. To get a phone line, that sort of thing.

I'm far from alright Jack and I'm getting seriously fucked off now with your total dismissal of my experience. Honestly, go away and live your miserable, closed minded life. My life is tough but at least I don't have you living next door. However shit life my be I'll never be as mired in bitterness as you.[/quote]
You badgered me to respond to you, called me patronising and arrogant, and now you’re getting fucked off?

tarasmalatarocks · 22/10/2021 22:30

Well to the lady above called some of us middle class lefties who didn’t vote for Brexit- I will leave the flag wavers to it, if you think a government that gives untendered multi million contracts to its mates , doesn’t actually offer a vote once terms are actually known and tells lies at the drop of a hat is all fine and dandy then rock on— I will view from the security of Copenhagen thanks

BlueFlavour · 22/10/2021 22:31

Ahem
Also love the rain, damp, grey skies and mist.

Good excuse for cuppas abd cake.

Theythinkitsalloveritisnow · 22/10/2021 22:32

Anyway, no point derailing this thread with discussing @Pumperthepumper deep disappointment with poor people not feeling the appropriate levels of misery suitable to their position, I'm off for few beers with my neighbors Smile

Let the positivity flow! Have a fun night all
