What is a reasonable price for professionals photos (baby)?

DC is 4 months old. Paid a small fee for a photoshoot knowing we would need to pay more for the photos (which we haven't seen yet) but I'm surprised just how expensive they are. About £1000 for a basic package.

AIBU to think this is a lot?

The thing is I think I will buy them which is probably what they count on but it's more than I expected and I am on mat leave on reduced pay.

I just wondered what others have paid?

Not London (if that makes a difference)

I was expecting to pay £500ish max £750

But fully understand this may be a reasonable price

What is included in the basic package?

CoRhona · 22/10/2021 19:00

I would expect the shoot to be free and photos expensive or shoot at that price with free prints.

Definitely not both Confused

Was this a company or a local photographer? You'd be best going with a local photographer as I think a lot of these photo companies can be money grabbing and like you say, count on people to want to pay!

SylvanasWindrunner · 22/10/2021 19:02

We went with someone just starting out and it cost £200 for maternity, newborn and one-year photos, with 30 digital images included. They were lovely Smile I'm sure her prices are much higher now though! Maybe you could find someone new who is trying to build a portfolio?

BunnytheFriendlyDragon · 22/10/2021 19:03

Cheapest is £650 for a all album of 10 photos and same images digitally

Most expensive is £1100 for a 20 pic album, 25 digital images and a photo movie

Individual images £100 or 400 for ten (digital)

£250 - £450. I looked into it as a potential present for my pregnant friend and ended up getting her something else instead! £1000 is insane.

WeeWelshWoman · 22/10/2021 19:03

£100 for a basic package (2-3 digital pics). £200 for a bigger package with 6-10 photos and 2 or 3 prints seems fairly standard by us.

BunnytheFriendlyDragon · 22/10/2021 19:04

The thing is now the photos have been taken I will want them if they're nice but they weren't keen to provide a price list before the shoot

It's a local yah photography co

Seems a very dubious business model!

Flittingaboutagain · 22/10/2021 19:09

I've just paid £250 for 20 digital images of high resolution for printing myself and one 8*12 print. Also not London.

JumperooSue · 22/10/2021 19:11

£1000?! For photos of a baby, no way. I would probably just about pay that for a wedding photographer.

We paid somewhere around £200 and received 10 digital images and one large print. Also our photographer was happy for us to take some ourselves as she went, there’s no way I’d even entertain £1000 or anything close.

riotlady · 22/10/2021 19:16

£1000 is what I paid for a full day of wedding photography! And that was only this August

riotlady · 22/10/2021 19:16

Agree that it sounds dodgy to take the photos and not tell you prices in advance

tiggerwhocamefortea · 22/10/2021 19:19

I wouldn't pay that and honestly how many photos do you need really? I'd just be ruthless and pick the best 10

ABCDEF1234 · 22/10/2021 19:20

Was it one of these Buy AGift style packages where you pay £5/10 for the shoot and no doubt an extortionate amount for the images?

Roselilly36 · 22/10/2021 19:21

We had professional photos taken in the studio for our two DS’ 20 & 18 years ago, at 3mths, 6 mths & a year old, it was expensive then, but so worth it, their portraits are great. If you can afford it do it, you won’t ever regret it. It snapshots a window in time. We had the photos in an album & one framed on art board of each period along side a family shot and still have them on our wall today. Really pleased we sucked up the expense.

Toottooot · 22/10/2021 19:25

That’s standard or is where I am anyway. I paid best part of £1000 for a beautiful album, big framed picture and all digital images.

StarfishDish · 22/10/2021 19:28

Max Speilman... £85 for a HUGE photo (framed) and lots of various sizes/prints. Smile

romdowa · 22/10/2021 19:28

Jesus that is shocking. I've a new born shoot booked for a few weeks and it's €160 and I'll get three prints mounted.

LittleDandelionClock · 22/10/2021 19:32

Ludicrous amount.

Digital cameras and even smartphone cameras are great these days. Like fuck would I be paying silly prices like this. I would be doing it myself.

BunnytheFriendlyDragon · 22/10/2021 20:05

Yes you get one photo included in the £25 we paid for the shoot

I'm tempted to pick ten digital images for £400 presumably we can get them on printed as we like

We want a couple to put up in the house and MIL and DM would like one but thinking we can get them printed and buy frames? We can also get an album made of ten images I suppose.

Also agree with PP it's such a special time and that it will be nice to have them in the future

I suppose it depends how many of the photos we actually really want when we go next week.

ForPingsSake · 24/10/2021 18:33

It depends. Some photographers are much better than others and will charge accordingly. A nice photo is not going to cost as much as a work of art. However, I would never have gone ahead with a photoshoot without knowing upfront what the prices were. If they are expensive they should be able to justify it.
