To ask why people announce they've named changed for a post?

Hi all, relatively new here and was just wondering why people might make a thread and announce that they've changed their name in order to write that specific post?

I understand the reason in changing the name as a certain situation may be a bit outing or they may not want other posters to connect the dots between previous posts made by the OP.
However what is the reason to actually announce the fact that the name has been changed? Is this so no one tries to find previous threads under that name as their won't be any or something along those lines?

When reading threads I sometimes tend to see something along the lines of, 'long term poster but name changed for this,' and have always wondered what the importance of this is? Is it so people don't think of the OP as a troll or something?

Also what does it mean when someone drip feeds and why is this an issue?
I did try and find answers to these questions but wasn't able too!

Thanks dedicated MNetters😉

Because, depending on what they’re posting about, that might get accused of being a troll

Cuntness · 20/10/2021 16:28

So when they're Advanced Searched by other users, no other posts or threads come up. No previous posting history can also indicate a troll, so they're basically saying they're not a troll.

Name changed but regular poster = this will appear as a first time, new to Mumsnet poster, i.e. troll material. Trolls tend to be first time posters.

People accuse posters of drip feeding when they add a very relevant detail that affects how people react to the post. So the irritation is that it would be better in the opening post. E.g. I refuse to have the vaccine...... (12 pages later...) Oh but actually my Dr has told me it would be clinically dangerous for me to have it.

AutistAwayWithUrConditionalLuv · 20/10/2021 16:40

Because of the posters who seem to think they've detected a troll with no posting history, completely ignoring that anyone can namechange...therefore having no posting history doesn't automatically make one a troll.

So I'm more baffled by the "Interesting first post, OP" posters. My opinion to that is always 'Really? You've not considered that they've namechanged...on a forum where you can namechange?'

@Cuntness right okay that makes sense I guess. How do you Advance Search though? Are you able to do this on the app or is it an online feature as I don't think I've ever seen it before? I have realised there are certain things you can't do on the app but you can do online such as send a personal message someone. Or maybe you can access this on the app if you have the subscription🤔 so many questions lol

@SummerHouse ahh I see. I can see how that's annoying as people would most likely react differently if they were provided all the information at the start. Thank you

I really want to name change because I did mine in a hurry and I can think of at least a hundred that I prefer. I haven't done it because I can't be bothered with all the people thinking I'm new to mn or dubious in some way, so I stick with this boring one.

knittingaddict · 20/10/2021 16:54

It is true that most troll threads are started by people with no or little posting history.

ViaRia · 21/10/2021 02:46

I’ve been wondering the same thing and was thinking of posting the questions on here too.

The thing I still don’t get is… how does stating ‘long time lurched, first time poster’ or even simply ‘not a troll’ help at all? Surely, if the poster were a troll, they would say the same thing?

SnowyPetals · 21/10/2021 03:03

It's interesting though, lots of trolls don't seem to bother with pretenting they're not by adding a "name change for the post".

OP, the funniest drip feed I have seen on here was a woman complaining about a naked man in the swimming pool changing room she was sitting in with her toddler son. Several pages in, she adds that it was the men's changing room because her toddler is male 😂
