To be dead peed off with business owner

Work in a skilled industry yet owner thinks its OK to pay is 2p above minimum wage. We get the bare minimum of holidays. Nothing extra at all. Just basics. Luckily we don't get to see the owner all the time. Visits every three weeks. Very mean spirited. He offered a girl on maternity leave who has a very poorly child a zero hour contract for her return after maternity. She's worked for him for years as well!! My colleague has a poorly grown up child who is having health problems at the moment and he doesn't even ask her how she is. He doesn't even ask any of us how we are and check in on us....or you know treat us like people instead of minions!!!! Final straw today when I was making everyone a drink and he asked me what I was doing, who asked me to make a drink, etc. Then made a big point t of going onto shop floor and saying that it wasn't on!!! I mean a good boss could have spent that time making his employees a cup of tea??? You know there's this thing of boosting staff morale???? Sorry to rant it's just got me today and I let a lot go over my head with him!!!

Honestly, life is too short to work for dickheads.

CV, agency, job sites, get out and get what you're worth.

New job time

2pence above min wage?
Ouch. Sadly, a lot of people are fucking miserly with what they pay their staff.
I see it day in, day out at work. Skilled tradesmen being bent over by their bosses who are charging them out at a killing, yet after they've travelled to and from work, and done their day's graft, are often making about minim wage- sometimes less all in all.

Its a joke, you'll also find the shit ones do more than pay miserly sums, they treat people like you've mentioned.

If you're skilled, there will be opportunity elsewhere. Take the leap, find better- it is out there.

Look for a new job please.

You're worth more than this Flowers

Thank you. The thing is I'm kinda stuck cus I'm single mum with an autistic child and short of childcare so they have got me really as the hours I work are 10 til 2. I really need school hours. I've looked at other jobs that are not even in the same field and I can't get those hours.

So if you are not prepared to do anything about it, you can't really complain, can you. The boss is meeting all the legal requirements regarding wages and holidays, plus I've never known a boss make the tea for his employees!

GoIntoTheLight · 20/10/2021 00:08

"I've never known a boss make the tea for his employees!"

You've worked for some bad bosses then. Also, not only is this boss not making a cuppa for his employees, he's announcing to his staff that tea making isn't on!

Agree with looking for a new job. Minimum wage for a skilled profession is shitty, I bet the staff turnover is high.

The ladies at work told me that the owner was helping himself to the chocolates a customer had brought in for us. When his wife told him to leave them alone as they are ours he said "well they (meaning us ladies working there) are fat anyway " I wasn't there so don't know if it was meant to be funny or not. Not that it is!! What can we do? A couple of my colleagues really upset. I was just angry.

Some of that sounds shite OP but the maternity is illegal if she wasn't on zero hours prior to maternity. I'd advise her to speak to ACAS although she may be out of time to make a claim if irs been over 3 months

MintJulia · 22/10/2021 00:13

OP, time to look for another job.
