To have no idea what to wear

I’ve lost my way a little bit with clothes what do you wear in your mid fifties ? . Are there any good clothing shops that you would recommend to me . I feel I need to up my game a bit and revamp my wardrobe as my main focus has been bringing up my now teenage son. I feel like I’ve lost sight of me and I wear clothes that make me invisible.

@Wineisrequired

What sort of clothes do you like?
What’s your figure ( hourglass/pear) and your hieght?

Wineisrequired · 19/10/2021 05:35

I’m a size 14 and 5,7 . I’d love to start wearing dresses again but have no confidence at all . I could just order some clothes and try on at home . Working from home also means tracksuit bottoms have become my go to option. I’d also like to dress a bit smarter for work as we have started going back to the office now. I just have no idea where to start .

Similar height and size here. I got some knee length skirts and pair with thick tights boots and a thin or thick jumper Skirts are cord and slightly a line but not much. Nice for work

Other than that I'm like you and lost my way and mostly wear leggings and an old t shirt ha ha

I am 51 and I think I dress fairly smartly, even when dressing down if that makes sense. I get most of my clothes from Whitestuff, Boden and Seasalt with some things like tops from Next.

I spend a fair bit of time at home. Nothing wrong with jogging bottoms at home, I have never owned a pair of jogging bottoms but I have leggings and long t-shirts tops for home, cropped leggings for summer full length for winter. 🙂

At your height and dress size, you should not have any difficulty finding things to choose from.

Thank you all for the feedback . I think some of it is a confidence thing as well. So used to being an Uber driver for my son 🤣 that jeans and trainers are my go to option . Over the next few weeks I will try and move away from this and start looking at other clothes.

You might be better moving this into Style and Beauty, OP, or also to start a similar thread there.

I would say though start by having a look at some fashion bloggers and working out what you like, or want to avoid. Then maybe get a couple of dresses helped by a John Lewis personal shopper, and then put together a capsule wardrobe of items that mix and match.

I hear you! Similar size
I like Joe Browns tunics, worn over leggings and boots. eBay is a good place to start...

ElftonWednesday · 19/10/2021 05:56

You could even make a fashion mood board, or just save what you like on Pinterest.

This woman is younger, but I like her work clothes style, and it seems pretty timeless. You might have to scroll down her posts a bit.

Great idea for a thread. Me too op.

I have fallen in love with dresses from here.....
carolinadressroom.co.uk/collections

There is a fb group too for swaps and info on the dress styles. You might regret clicking the link tho, it becomes a bit of an addiction !

I'm your age and your size, I have a real mix of looks but the thing that makes all of them look better for me is my hair being done and a bit of makeup.

My favourite outfits are:

Knitted loungewear with longline gilets over - trainers or boots

V neck thick strapped camis (Roman) with a swingy long cardigan over and straight leg jeans - flats or boots

Midi skirts (pref elasticated waists so I can get them to sit where is most flattering on me) with a skimming t-shirt or roll neck and denim or biker jacket - trainers or boots

Black leather look magic trousers with long line black vest over then a long shacket or unlined faux suede coats - trainers or boots

Knee length swingy tunic dresses with tights and boots

I also wear lots of long smart but loose Made In Italy jumpers over leather or black leggings with boots

Love a shirt dress too, alone or over jeans or leggings, with bottom half undone or all undone with a cami underneath

Similar age to you and similarly lost my way.
I found www.missussmartypants.com very useful.
It's an American site so the the clothes links aren't as useful as I'd like, but you can join for a small fee (£24?) and you get useful info on what suits your shape and size, and the idea is to dress in a flattering way by getting what suits you and what fits. There's a useful guide to what basics to buy, and what clothes would go with what so you can capsule wardrobe rather than fall into the trap of buying a thing that you like and then having nothing it goes with.
I joined for a year (it's not overly fashion based so the general ideas come round regularly) I found it useful as I was starting an office job after years of uniforms, and I got complimented on my style (if you knew me you'd understand my astonishment- I'm known for jeans and sweater.
Anyway just thought I'd offer it up!
Oh, one thing I'd never have thought of: fine someone who is handy with a needle (I found one on fb) as alterations make the world of difference!

Have you thought of trying one of those sites like Stitchfix? (They select clothes for you and send them to you at home)

They ask you questions about yourself and you style and you have to go through lots of pictures selecting what you like /dislike.

I did it for like 4 months. Eventually stopped because my size is difficult to work out, but kept a few pieces that I wear a lot.
