Toddler inconsolable with a cold?

20month old DS has a cold/cough and for the last few days has been so miserable constant crying/screaming and throwing himself around in temper. I am going mad. Is this normal?

Have you given him medication?

Tirnanogg · 16/10/2021 19:37

If they don't respond to calpol it could be an ear infection - both times that mine have been properly inconsolable that was the problem. The second time I was kicking myself afterwards for not recognising the signs!

Ds2 has always had a very low tolerance for a stuffy nose (he's a thumb sucker so i dont think it helps that his natural way of feeling comfortable when under the weather is out when his nose is blocked).

It makes him extremely irritable when he has a cold, so normal in our house unfortunately.

Calpol plugins help make bedtime less horrific.

Medicine. You can alternate calpol and ibuprofen. Ibuprofen is great for pain relief and reducing fever.

Get as much liquids as you can into him, even if it's only little sips.

If he wants to lay on the sofa, let him. Keep the lights dimmed.

Oh yes, ear infection - good call.

This is also unfortunately a common cause of inconsolable child round here. I'm forever sniffing ds2's ear when he has a cold

My one, if he’s flipping himself around with a cold and wailing, you can generally rely on the fact that it’s attacked his ear canals. If he has a fairly high fever, I’d talk to the doctors.

I agree about possible ear infection but also could be a lack of sleep / poor quality sleep due to congestion making them grumpy.

Can you get anything (menthol type) to put in a warm bath? Long baths helped mine when they felt rubbish. Always aided night times.

If not ears then it might be a sore throat (that's what it usually is with my two). I keep a stash on mini milks in especially - always seems to calm my toddler down.

PetrifriedPumpkin · 16/10/2021 20:07

I'd also suggest getting ears checked out.

What's his temperature?

Have you seen his tonsils? All clear? Is he tugging at his ears?

Does he need to see a doctor?
