Toddlers at Fireworks display

At what age do you think it's ok to take your little ones to a firework display? I have no idea if our toddler will love it or hate it. Any previous experiences please?

I took my 2.5 year old and they loved it. However I know older kids who have hated it. Depends on the kid. I'd play some on YouTube with the volume turned up really loud and see how they react.

PurplePizzaCake · 15/10/2021 22:06

That's a great idea. I'll test out some firework videos to test the water. He usually doesn't mind loud noises etc and I love fireworks so really want to go!

We’re thinking of taking DD2 along this year. Ear defenders on, wrap up warm, see how it goes. A small local thing run by a school. I wouldn’t go to a massive one but I doubt any are going abroad this year?

MrsTulipTattsyrup · 15/10/2021 22:08

How about some little ear defenders for the loud bangs, so you can enjoy the visuals without them?

Angel2702 · 15/10/2021 22:11

Our younger two came from babies, eldest from age 2 1/2. We used to do the earlier kids display which had kid friendly music and quieter fireworks.

Mapletreelane · 15/10/2021 22:11

Are there any silent firework displays near you? We have a huge firework display near us (cancelled this year unfortunately) that has silent display at 6ish for the toddlers and younger kids.

DS loves them, we live on the coast and there is a free display every weekend for a couple of months every winter. He's 3 now, we do woolly hat and ear defenders and see lots of others with the same. We eat dinner early, walk down for the fireworks with DS in PJs and a snuggle suit over the top, after the fireworks he goes into the buggy has some warm milk (insulated water bottle) and falls asleep on the walk home. It's really nice

Twilightstarbright · 15/10/2021 22:22

Took DS from a baby with ear defenders, he’s always loved it.

Disney fireworks for nearly 3 year old twins back on 2019....they both loved them!

We did take ear defenders though, one kept them on throughout and the other decided they wanted them off part way through.

We will be taking the ear defenders this year to the local display.

My kids have both loved fireworks from when they were little. Some kids don't like them though and I think the only way to find out is on the day unfortunately

Mine loves fireworks but hates the noise. Bought ear defenders and now she just loves them. They are not expensive, I think I paid £10-15 on Amazon.

Sandsnake · 15/10/2021 22:44

Yep, very much depends on the kid. DS is quite noise sensitive but loved the fireworks. I made him a ‘fireworks playlist’ of music on my phone and he listened with my wireless headphone and loved it. Not sure if the ear defenders recommended by others would be better though.

ThePoisonousMushroom · 15/10/2021 22:46

Took all of ours from around 18 months. Think they’ve have found wearing ear defenders more distressing than the noise! DD2 memorably fell asleep sitting on my head at a display when she was 2.5. Otherwise they’d always loved it!

Lazypuppy · 15/10/2021 22:50

Took all ours since 9 months oldz but we go to 'quiet' shows which are aimed for kids

sjpkgp1 · 15/10/2021 23:08

I suspect ear defenders recommended by others could be the answer, then just give it a go and see how it goes - it might go better than you think. I've got 4. Eldest son and daughter loved them, second daughter absolutely hated them (and in fact any loud noise). youngest son liked them, but sometimes became nervous due to his nearest oldest sister crying. She loves them now !

fourandnomore · 15/10/2021 23:16

From babies all of them with our hands over ears to begin with to test the water but they’ve all liked them luckily

WorkBitch · 16/10/2021 00:16

I have kids with sensory issues, but agree- ear defenders all the way

Linnet · 16/10/2021 01:06

Dd1 was 12 weeks old for her first fireworks display, she was fine. Dd2 was 6 months, she wasn’t great with loud noises it turned out and she was about 5 or 6 before she really enjoyed it. Odd really as she’s the noisiest child ever!

Skinnymuffins · 16/10/2021 01:08

I think I'm confused 🤣 my daughter was an August baby (teenager now) and we took her to the fireworks where she fell asleep the entire time 🤣 my son was a March baby and was fascinated in November.

Didn't know people didn't take their kids young (if they haven't already shown signs of being scared/won't enjoy)
