My ds10 loves music but currently just listens to songs on his iPad via YouTube. For Christmas I was hoping to get him some sort of personal MP3 player/iPod where he can download and listen to his own music.

But everything I come across online looks like you have to download music onto a laptop then move the music files over to the personal player. In this day and age is there not such a thing as an iPod that runs using a music app like Spotify or Amazon music like a regular IPhone would? Ideally I don't want him having a phone just yet but neither of us have a laptop and I can't figure out how else to do it. I am admittedly useless at tech...

What was wrong with cds and cassettes Hmm

you could get an iphone but not put a sim in it? then it will connect to spotify on your home wifi and you can have a spotify subscription. It would also connect to bluetooth speakers / headphones.

Or similar for any small phone / tablet that is cheaper than an iphone.

You can get iPods but they do require you to have a computer to add music. So for example you add cds to your computer then transfer the files as mp3.

You can also buy cd walkmans still. I got one for my mum last xmas from Argos as she still loves listening to cds in bed and doesn't get on with "modern" technology!

Not that it answers your actual problem but.. DD has a Walkman. She sends her Spotify playlists to someone off Etsy who then puts them onto tapes. So they do exist!

I would love to just get him a cd Walkman but I don't think I'd be preparing him for the modern world lol.

If I were to get an old style Walkman with no sim, could I still download and use Spotify (or another music app). Presuming I would still need to link it to my own apple store account? I just looked at an iPod touch which is newly £200! Pretty sure I could get an older iPhone for less...

I would get him a smart phone with no SIM, then in a couple of years when he needs a phone, get a sim and you're sorted. Don't buy him a bloody CD Walkman whatever you do 😂😂
