Asking for bank card photo for refund

I used a gym on a pay as you go basis when on holiday in another part of the UK earlier this year and paid for my sessions by credit card. I turned up for the last session and the gym was not open. Waited 30 minutes but no one arrived so I went back to my holiday residence and asked for a refund.

After two ignored emails and a few phone calls later I finally received a response but they will not just give me a refund even with me providing evidence of my booking and payment. They want a photo of my bank card or my bank statement to proces the refund. Not my credit card but my bank card.

They won't give me a phone number to call to give the credit card details they insist on bank details.

AIBU or is this really off?

This is a genuine company but I just don't like the idea of sending a photo of my debit card over email!

I am sure they are supposed to refund on the card you paid from.

Should go back to the original payment method. No reason for a photo of your bank card at all

They have no right to ask for a picture of your card and it goes against every piece of security advice your bank will tell you. The connection isn't secure, anyone could see/steal/use it.

Ask for a manager and tell them to either refund to original method or do a remote refund to any card (this is possible) or send you a cheque.

Don't send them a photo of your bank card.

This would be a breach of PCI DSS. No chance I’d be sending a picture. I would inform them that you won’t be doing that. Surely they’ve breached the contract by being closed? Hope you get it sorted!

Thanks everyone. I thought it was weird but they are insistent.
