Nobody wearing masks at school, despite being told by head.

My DS’s school has made masks mandatory again for all children, however most people are not wearing them anyway.

My DS is quite upset about this, as he is autistic, and is also in year 11, so does not want to miss 10 days of school if he catches COVID.

He tells me that although masks have been made mandatory, most people are not wearing them, and the teachers are not enforcing it.

I emailed the head a few days ago, as it seems stupid to make a rule and not have it enforced, but I have not received a response.

I understand some people are exempt, but surely not 90% of the school. (I pointed out that my DS is autistic, but should probably add that this is a mainstream school.)

It's not a legal requirement so most people won't adhere unfortunately. Has he had the vaccine?

Are all of the staff wearing masks?

There's been a few threads about masks in schools at the moment.
Unfortunately the government have decided masks aren't needed, so that's that. Schools can try, but if you were on here the last few months you'll have seen endless threads where posters and probably a few people from astroturf type groups were endlessly complaining about any health and safety measures in schools, and when schools were on key worker children only there were dozens of threads full of posters attacking school staff who suggested schools needed mitigation measures in place. Schools are in a no win situation at the moment.

The goading and anti-mitigation measures posters seem to be suspiciously quiet now schools have gone back with almost no measures and cases are going up. Unfortunately whilst you and your son are reasonable, health and safety measures in school have been a source of conflict in recent months.

Just make it uniform- they seem to be able to enforce that

ANameChangeAgain · 15/10/2021 09:43

Making it uniform is a good idea @araiwa
The covid cases in my dcs school is rocketing again so they also brought back mask wearing for communal areas but not classrooms. Both of mine are vaccinated and already had covid early summer, so they should be okay this time.

MarySiward · 15/10/2021 09:44

No, he has not had the vaccine, but will be getting it when he is 16, as it is looking like this will be before they get the vaccines in school

It's not as simple as that araiwa. With masks by law people can say they are exempt, there's no evidence required, there's lots of parents who'll say no to it and claim exemption. I know a few anti maskers, plandemic types and they are forever writing emails and calling their children's schools about one thing or another.

AnkleDeep · 15/10/2021 09:52

Schools around here have made it part of the uniform - so they are worn.

plenty of schools have rules which are not law, and they enforce them!
