To ask what our premiums will go up by?

Hideously boring, please forgive me…

Our car was broken into a few nights ago and about £4ks worth of gear stolen. Golf clubs and car charging cables, if that’s important.

DH wants to claim on the house insurance but I’m nervous about claiming and our premiums going through the roof. Anyone know what our premiums are likely to increase by? We currently pay about £500pa for building and contents. Should we just save up and by the stuff back, or claim?

I haven’t had personal experience of this exact situation but have had a house insurance claim (£45k) and it didn’t really impact my premiums (not to any extent I noticed so would only be a couple of pounds) this was 11years ago.

Might not go up much at all. And it would have to go up A LOT to add up to more than £4000 in extra premiums.

One way to find out would be to go to a comparison website and get a quote, declaring that you've made a £4000 claim in the last year

Thanks both - that’s really helpful. I hadn’t considered making a fake application, that’s a really good idea!

What’s the point in having the insurance if you don’t ever claim? I would understand your reasoning if it was less than £500 but £4k plus is a huge hit!

Good question! I guess I figured I had the policy in case we were unlucky enough to be flooded/have a fire/major burglary. I suppose that seems ridiculous now that I write it down.

I’ll call the insurance company now.
