DH has really confused me. Easily done tbf and it is early and I’m tired.

I get paid 4 weekly. We treat my wage as though it’s a monthly wage though, and all budgets are done accordingly.

This month I got paid on the 1st. So this morning I made an offhand comment about looking forward to us having an extra £1700 this month what with the extra payment.

DH first looked really puzzled and then went into great detail about why that’s not how it works. His logic was that the mortgage (same amount as my wage, coincidentally) comes out on the 1st then the first payment this month pays this month’s and then the payment on the 29th pays November’s so I’m ahead but it’s not spare money.

I KNOW he’s wrong, if we have 12 bills a year and 13 wages then it MUST be extra. But he’s confused me with his (wrong) logic.

I think because he’s focusing on one specific bill? And forgetting that we have lots of monthly bills and his monthly wage as well?

I need a simple explanation so I can convince him that we do indeed have a ‘free’ £1700 this month. It’s for his own good as it will make him happy, he’s all stressed this morning for other reasons.

Well if you'd already paid the mortgage when you got paid on the 1st I'd say that this extra payment is spare, as you've got the mortgage money from the 1st??

52/4 = 13
So you get paid 13x each year but there are only 12 months. One pay packet is “extra” to your monthly mortgage payments.

It isn’t it goes out on the 1st.

Or that was the case maybe a couple of payments ago, must have got paid on like the 5th before so that was early for the mortgage on the 1st and didn't need to use the money from the 1st?

Yes yes yes. This is my logic.

If your budget accounts for 12 x £1700 but in actual fact you get 13 x £1700 then yes it’s extra to what’s been budgeted.
Unless your budget is worked out like (13x£1700)/12 to give an average monthly income across the year?

You are correct. One month of each year you get paid twice and this is an extra one.

The DH is getting confused, because she'll be paid on the 1st AND 29th of this month, so the 1st will pay this month mortgage and the 29th will pay next month. BUT OP surely it was last month when you had the extra payment? Since you got paid on the 3rd and your mortgage had already been paid that month?

Every single one of our bills/monthly budgets are done on a calendar monthly basis. DH gets paid on the last day of the month. I get paid in 4 weekly intervals. There’s never no money in the account.

Therefore I have a ‘bonus’ wage coming at the end of this month and we should all be happy.

No idea why he’s confusing the issue but he made me doubt myself.

Yes. You've already had your bonus month.

In theory 13 wages over 12 months says you will have one spare

But if your wages are used for the mortgage then this month isn't spare-perhaps it came in a previous month?

It would have to be paid on, say the 3rd after your mortgage was paid, then another on 31st just before the next mortgage

It’s not quite as simple as that is it. You have £1700 “extra” spread over the year. If you spent the £1700 when you got it this month what would you pay the mortgage and other bills with that are due before you next get paid? You can’t spend all of it immediately so it’s not all spare, although you probably will have a bit extra this month you won’t have all of it.

It is really hard to know without extra information - did you need your money to go in to pay the mortgage that month. Is your budget set up knowing that is how you get paid.

Yes, it's 100% "extra" money. Your dh is wrong. My dh used to be paid 4 weekly and would, one month a year be paid twice. It was "spare" money.

Your monthly wage is £1700 according to your budgeting calculations. You get paid twice in one month every year, so yes, it's like a 'bonus'. There'll always be one payday that isn't allotted to a mortgage payment.

I don't think this is the bonus month though, that must have happened already for you to get paid on the first of the month this time round.

No he's wrong, get him to write down the 12 mortgage payment dates and the 13 salary payment dates and then cross them off in pairs

Obviously there will be one salary left at the end

He's not thinking of the year as a whole but even so hw is it not clear to him that there is one more salary than payment?

My dbil gets paid 4 weekly.
The 'extra' pay goes on their annual holiday.

My wages aren’t used for the mortgage.

Dh gets paid on the last day of every month so his wage is always in there for that.

I think he’s just confusing the issue because the amounts are roughly the same (my wage and the mortgage payment).

This reminds me of when I lived in Spain. Payroll divided our salaries into 14, and we got double salary in June and Dec each year.

When you pay your mortgage in October in the account will be his pay from the last day of September plus your additional pay this month. If you spend the same each month then there should be additional 1700 in the account on 1st October once the mortgage has been paid. No money needs to be saved for the next bill ls as you will both be getting paid again at the end of October to cover November.

And yes, October is the only month where you'll receive two salaries in one calendar month

So if your wages aren't used for the mortgage then one of those salaries is definitely 'extra' to your monthly bills

Not if they work on the calendar month.
All that happened in September was that OP got paid very early, whereas DP gets paid very late. Maybe in his mind he's allocated your payment on the 1st October to last month, forgetting that you'd already been paid in September.
