To wonder what the point of test and trace is?

I have been through two longish calls this week with test and trace - one for me and one for my daughter. They asked lots of questions about where we had been over the last week and when, but I have no idea what (if anything) they're going to do with that data.

So for example, I said that I had gone to the theatre last Wednesday. They asked for the postcode of the theatre but they weren't interested in the time of the show, where we had been sitting etc. I told them that I had visited a cafe. Again, they were not really interested in what time I went there, just the postcode and date. I said that my daughter had met with some friends the day before doing a positive lateral flow test, and they wanted to know where but not who.

At the end of the call, they instructed me to notify anyone who I had been in close contact with. I queried the period to which this applied, as I had already notified everyone we'd seen in the couple of days prior to testing positive/getting symptoms, but they had asked about my activities over the whole of the last week. For example, did I need to tell my hairdresser who I had seen on Saturday, several days before my symptoms started. I was told that it was up to me, and that i might want to let her know if I felt it was necessary. Confused

They didn't take any details of close contacts, other than members of my immediate household. They did text my dd and my dh, advising them that they were close contacts and therefore might need to isolate. This was after I had answered the question about where I thought I might have caught covid by explaining that my daughter already had it, and after telling them that the whole household had been isolating since dd's positive ltf on Sunday.

The callers were extremely nice and obviously just doing their jobs but AIBU to think that the whole thing seems utterly pointless? What do they actually do with all of that random postcode data? Does anyone know?
