I have a 3.5 day a week job they know I was hoping for another half a day so offered me Monday and Wednesday half day mornings as extra. They dropped the Monday half day which worked for me as I was struggling with the extra hours but now on the Wednesday I’m constantly doing extra and going well beyond my half a day should finish at roughly 12.30 but it’s going on well untill 4 o’clock some days as they need me. I need to say something and set an end time to my day as I’m having to cancel afternoon plans I was supposed to pick up some important bits from town and collect a form from my gp. I have a very lovely job and don’t want to let them down how would you word it are they allowed to have me work with no end time stated

'Is there anything else you need me to do before I leave in half an hour?'

'I'm scheduled to work until 12.30 today so if you need that sorting leave it for me to look at when I'm next in'

'Sorry, afraid I can't stay later, I have an appointment!'

Really though if this has become something you've accepted over time then you might need an initial conversation with your manager where you let them know that you've been fine to do the extra hours until now but you will be reverting back to your contracted hours as of today. You don't need to explain or justify why.

Do you have a contract with the hours listed? Or is it one of those contracts where they won't say your hours because it 'depends on the needs of the business'?

You need to just start being stricter with yourself and leaving at 12:30.

I am not clear what's going on here - you have an end time to your day already don't you? Are you staying of your own volition because you think it's busy?

Or are they asking you to work overtime?

Either way - you just leave when you are due to unless you want to do overtime. The response "Sorry, can't do overtime today" is all that is required here.
