To ask what happens if you lose maternity notes?

Have so much going on and cannot find them anywhere, have had to rearrange 20 weeks scan as I don’t have them but have been told to find them before scan. What happens if I can’t find them?

So bizarre you’ve had to rearrange your scan. At 20 weeks there would only be your booking summary (which could easily be reprinted) and your scan report from your dating scan, possible a note of your BP and urinalysis from 16 weeks. They could easily still scan you and issue you a new set of notes, it really isn’t the end of the world.

I was shouted at and on the new appointment paper she wrote ‘BRING NOTES!!’ I asked if they could put it on the computer or note whatever down but they said no I need notes or they won’t scan me. Thank you for putting my mind at rest. I will ring them

I'd make a complaint about them shouting at you

NotMyselfWithoutCoffee · 05/10/2021 15:30

Whatever the problem is she shouldnt be shouting at you, make a complaint.

ChickPeaSalad · 05/10/2021 15:33

It was really, really drilled into us at our initial appointments that the notes were so crucial because you're being seen by various departments/at various places and they don't have that information electronically accessible everywhere. So they do require you to have the notes at each appointment or they will be missing potentially crucial info/won't have a way to convey stuff to the next clinician.

There was a way to set up a login to a website with notes on electronically which I did but they didn't have all of the info, just the basics.

Essentially you have to find your notes. They're going to be unable to do the scan thoroughly if they can't see information about your pregnancy until now, and if they don't have your notes to write information down on. I have no idea what they do if you've completely got rid of them and burned them!

I would make a complaint about them shouting at you, that isn't acceptable under any circumstances.

H0cusP0cus · 05/10/2021 15:34

I would complain about the way she spoke to you.
Can you remember when you last had them?
Have they been left in the car? In a bag under stairs?

girlmom21 · 05/10/2021 15:36

Call your midwife for replacements.

Throughout Covid our trust was doing everything electronically so I don't know why they were so arsey to you.

skahan · 05/10/2021 15:38

That's ridiculous OP, I'd complain about being treated like that. I managed to completely wreck my notes in my third pregnancy by leaving a banana in the folder with them and forgetting 🤦‍♀️ I realised once I got to the hospital for my 20 week scan and bless them they were so nice. Whilst I was in the scan they printed me a completely new set of notes out and it wasn't an issue at all.

HerbivorousRex · 05/10/2021 15:39

From a practical point of view I’d contact your midwife team to explain what has happened and ask them if they can issue you a new set of notes (I was a midwife and I promise you’re not the first person this has happened to).
However, if it was the midwife who shouted at you and cancelled your appointment (I’m assuming it was a sonographer rather than one of the midwives) then I’d ask to speak to the team leader instead.

If you were shouted at by a healthcare professional then that’s absolutely unacceptable and I suggest you make a complaint to PALs or the service manager.

Thank you all Smile

This categorically isn’t true.
Contact the unit; complain about being shouted at, ask for a replacement and a new scan appointment. And don’t worry. Smile

1FootInTheRave · 05/10/2021 20:55

No one should be shouting at you.

But, depending on trust will mean someone has to take time to pull your details and refill notes in.

Doesn't sound a big deal but the community team I've just left are on their arses as they're so short staffed and overworked. Plus, limited IT access which makes everything so so much harder Sad

Shouldn't imapct scanning though.

SylvanasWindrunner · 05/10/2021 20:59

That sounds awful and weirdly old fashioned. I had DD in 2019 and there were no paper notes. Everything was just on the system and I got to access them through an app. This was Scotland though.

They can't not give you any prenatal care because you've lost your notes! Definitely complain.
