Is this a scam?

Had an email in my junk folder this morning saying that they have hacked my iPhone and have recordings of me watching adult videos on my phone (it has been known Blush) and unless I want them sending to everyone in my contacts I have to pay them money.

I've had my fair share of Egyptian Prince scam emails offering my their inheritance but this one seemed really well worded and professionally written so it's freaked me out a bit. I'm 99% sure it's a scam but it's not one I've ever heard of before. Has anyone else had this?

Very common scam

KingsleyShacklebolt · 05/10/2021 08:37

Of COURSE it's a scam.

It's so clearly a scam that even your email software has identified it as such.

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 05/10/2021 08:37

Everyone's had it, it's one of the most common emails scams!

But, hey, if you don't want your friends to know what you're been up feel free to pay up.

CarrieMoonbeams · 05/10/2021 08:39

I haven't, but there was a thread a wee while ago about exactly this. It's a scam, please don't worry.

jessie436 · 05/10/2021 08:39

I've literally never heard of this one! But thank you for reassuring me.

I've had it. I just ignored and nothing happened. Please just block and move on.

LaBellina · 05/10/2021 08:42

Very common scam. Many people fall for it because it appeals to their sense of shame.
Delete and ignore. Or send them back ‘not today, Satan’ if you dare.

I once worked somewhere were everyone in the office got the email at the same time, it caused much hilarity when people started admitting to the sites they “might” have visited during work hours.

Surprisingly the scammers didn't get get many takers for keeping people's browsing habits quiet

jessie436 · 05/10/2021 09:00

Thanks all I did think it was a scam but it definitely got me more worried than the Egyptian prince lol. Also a quick google search tells me 'camfecting' is actually a thing which is quite scary.

Yes it's a scam. I received one of those emails and even though I knew it was a scam (and I hadn't been accessing adult videos) it is still unpleasant and un-nerving isn't it. But yes, scamity scamity scam.

Piffle11 · 05/10/2021 12:10

There was one in my junk folder telling me they had filmed me wanking whilst watching an adult film on my PC… This has never happened. It said I had to give them thousands of bitcoin or otherwise they would ruin me! It’s a scam, don’t worry about it. Block and move on.

JovialNickname · 05/10/2021 19:59

It's a very common scam, please don't worry! I've had the email too (and did have adult videos on my phone also) and absolutely nothing happened.

BakingOfTheFoodCats · 05/10/2021 20:03

I had one of them but it proper spooked me as they were sending emails to me from my own address to look like they had access to my account but then I read that people can make it appear
Like they are sending you an email from your own address (I obviously changed the password and everything) but they were also claiming to have videos of me and telling me I had to send them money

hangrylady · 05/10/2021 20:04

Yes I had this, complete scam

Hesma · 05/10/2021 21:15

I had it a very similar one to my work email… in a school 🤦‍♀️

barbedwired · 05/10/2021 21:24

Cover your camera people when on the phone then no worries Grin
