AIBU - paid £6 for an empty box

So I did a big shop in tesco last night and bought some cream. When I got home and opened the box it was empty! No cream Hmm

In my defence I was knackered when I did the shop and didn't notice the missing weight (it's only a small tube).

My question is should I take it back to tesco and try and get my money back or will they not believe me as anyone could go home, empty a box and claim it was missing? Or as it's just £6 and its embarrassing cream Blush should I just leave it and chalk it down to me being dippy?

I wouldn't make a special trip but I would take it back

Noogar · 04/10/2021 20:23

Someone's nicked it so I'd consider it a good deed and you might have paid for someone's embarrassing cream who otherwise can't afford it.

Noogar · 04/10/2021 20:24

Unless of course you can't afford it then go back so that you only pay once for your own embarrassing cream.

You can email Tesco, they’re actually really good. I have had a few recurring issues and reported them using their feedback link. They not only called me to talk through the issue, they refunded the cost and sent me a voucher

I hate this sort of thing - today I bought loads of grapes and left them on the counter Hmm. They put them aside thankfully.

I would get in touch with them and explain - can you send a DM via twitter or an email to save a potentially wasted journey?

I had a similar situation with a bag of dried mango of all things, there was about 2 bits in a 100g bag. I took it back, they did question me a bit suspiciously but they gave me my money back. I'm very respectable looking though which helps.

Thanks guys, I hadn't even thought if emailing/DMing them!

Did you use self scan? It weighs it and would challenge an empty box usually

MrsPnut · 04/10/2021 20:44

I have usually contacted the manufacturer when something is faulty like that, they can track it from the batch codes on the box.

Ponypizzy · 04/10/2021 20:56

I had this with some hair dye. I had the receipt and they refunded me in store. They did say usually if someone is going to steal something they would just take it and not leave the box but they said they’d send back to the manufacturer as faulty. Don’t know if they’d bother tbh but they were quite good.

This happened to me in John Lewis, I went back and the woman said I’d bought the display box Blush

mcmooberry · 04/10/2021 21:09

I went back to M&S when I saw I had been charged for 2 chickens and I had only bought one. I had eaten the original chicken by the time I was able to go back. They refunded me no problem. I apologised to the person behind me in the queue in case there was a long drawn out debate about it.
