Builder used a different colour grout

We have had 2 bathrooms and 2 toilets renovated. The builder we are using has sent a different person to tile the last toilet. He came today to finish grouting and he has used a different colour grout to the other 3 rooms. It is really noticeable to me and I’m pretty irritated. Realistically is there anything I can do? Do I have to just suck it up?

Ask them to regrout it

mrsbyers · 02/10/2021 16:18

I’d be furious - get them back to scrape the grout out and redo

Porcupineintherough · 02/10/2021 16:22

What had you previously agreed? If it was for a certain colour of grout and he's not used that, then insist its redone to spec.

If there was no spec then your position is less certain. Assuming that the rooms are not adjacent then there is no clear case for the grout matching bw them, although if the tiles are identical then that suggests it should be.

SW1amp · 02/10/2021 16:24

2 different groups in the same room, I could understand

But it sounds horribly ‘soulless new build with bulk bought materials’ to have the exact same tiles and grout in every single bathroom
Didn’t you want any sort of variation?!

SW1amp · 02/10/2021 16:24

Grouts, not groups

StarryStarrySocks · 02/10/2021 16:28

I thought you meant there were 2 different colours of grout in the same room, which would be unacceptable. I wouldn't be bothered by this.

Seashor · 02/10/2021 16:56

We’re currently having work done. You’re lucky they managed to get any grout.

Overthebow · 02/10/2021 17:07

As in different rooms? Why are all the tiles the same in all the rooms anyway, surely it looks better for there to be some difference between rooms?

Rollergirl11 · 02/10/2021 17:18

I have variation with other things in the rooms. Anyway I wasn’t asking for opinions on my choice of consistency of grout colour. More is it reasonable of me to ask them to rectify?

As said above, it depends if you specified the grout to be used or not.

If you did, absolutely.

If you left it to the builders, not really.

Rollergirl11 · 02/10/2021 17:38

We did discuss the colour of grout being used previously. As I say the other rooms were tiled by the same person but they pulled in a different tiler for this room. He wouldn’t have seen the other rooms to see the grout used but I assumed the project manager would have told him which one to use.

Viviennemary · 02/10/2021 17:42

I don't think you'll have much comeback when its a different room. I think asking them to remove all the grout would be unreasonable. But if the correct grout could be put over the top that would be ok.

Bagamoyo1 · 02/10/2021 17:47

As others have said, it depends entirely on your agreement with the builder.
If it was “White tiles and pink grout in all rooms please” - then you can expect white tiles and pink grout in all rooms. Anything else needs re-doing.
If it was “tiles and grout in all rooms please” - then you’re stuck with it.

Were you there when it was being done, and did you comment at the time that it was different?

Vgbeat · 03/10/2021 22:26

Can't say it would bother me unless they had used something like black and I don't recall ever wandering around and noticing the colour of the grout in one room to another. I presume we're talking of shades of the same colour.

Cocomarine · 03/10/2021 22:28

Furious? 🤣 Seriously? Over a simple mistake that’s easily rectified?
Noogar · 03/10/2021 22:29

Are the tiles different colours?

Noogar · 03/10/2021 22:30

And does the room with the different colour come off one of the other ones?

gardeninggirl68 · 03/10/2021 22:43

which brand of grout was it?

a manufacturer we use has changed their formula without changing colour name

MoiraNotRuby · 03/10/2021 22:47

Unless you specified, I think you would be unreasonable to ask them to redo at their expense.

And - it is done now- resources are scarce on this dying planet- even if they have cocked up how much does it really matter?

gardeninggirl68 · 03/10/2021 22:50

building resources are particularly short at the moment....theres very very little out there

how are the grout colours differing op?

DramaAlpaca · 03/10/2021 22:50

This might be a silly question, but are you sure the grout is dry? It always looks a completely different colour when wet, then dries much lighter.

watingroom2 · 03/10/2021 23:51

this thread needs pictures!

AntiSocialDistancer · 03/10/2021 23:53

If you have a project manager and a build being overseen by one team? It sounds like their responsibility to fix

Whattheschitt · 03/10/2021 23:58

When you say different colours. Is one black one white? Or is two shades of the same colour?

minatrina · 04/10/2021 00:05

Yes, pictures are needed here I think!
