For a suitable personal music system for a 10 year old?

What I would have called a Walkman back in the day lol. My ds loves listening to music and it would be great to get him something he can easily download and listen to music on.

He has an iPad but no music apps yet. I'm a technophobe and don't know what would be best for him. If he had some sort of iPod could he link up music from his iPad to it?

Mine has an CD player (we’re a bit behind in tech in this house!) and she listens to music on YouTube too.
I was thinking about getting her an Alexa so she could listen to anything she wants, but decided against it for now.
I’m interested to hear what others do.

ITunes app on the iPhone with some wireless headphones? Or an Alexa

We have Alexa but I'd like something he can use headphones with and take out with him.

I'm not really ready for him to have a phone. I was thinking of some sort of MP3 player or iPod but then I'm not sure how to transfer music onto them. Back in my day they had USB ports that you'd plug into your computer but these days we don't really download music files onto laptops. I sound so old
