Speeding ticket - partner

My partner got a speeding ticket. It places him on the other side of London to where he said he was, which was at home with our kids and his mum.

It’s definitely our car. And the car was around that area in a different week that same month. But could the date and time be wrong? Do speeding tickets ever get the right car but the wrong time?

Have your plates been cloned? When you say it's definitely your car, is there a picture or just the reg number?

Could he have let someone else use the car? Have you asked him? Is there a reason you think he was lying to where he was?

It’s a picture of the car

Any suspicion he could be lying about where he was?

Camel1979 · 26/09/2021 23:24

We talked about it when the ticket came through. He was upset about the ticket mostly, and we agreed together I think that they must have got the date and time wrong.

He would have told me if someone else had borrowed the car, either then, or when the ticket came through.

I don’t have a specific reason to think he’s lying, and the timings would actually have to be very tight to place him across London, given where he was before and after.

We aren’t getting on fantastically this month - a bit of petty squabbling, not communicating well. Maybe par for the course in a 12 year relationship, but a bit unusual for us.

I am very likely putting two and two together and making five. But if someone knew if the speed camera process is ever flawed, I could at least stop worrying about this.

Hi, my DH once got a ticket for a camera that put our car in the wrong location. For the time and date it gave, we were in the car but in a different location. We think it must have been a mobile camera that had been moved to the roadworks on the motorway where we were actually driving but it hadn't been updated to show an accurate location. We sent back a note saying he was driving at that time on that day but in X location instead and never heard any more - am assuming they had the same thing with lots of other drivers. But this was years ago so the tech should be better now...

Cherrysoup · 26/09/2021 23:32

Can you see the driver/car colour? Cloned plates or he’s lying.

Camel1979 · 26/09/2021 23:34

It’s the same car colour and make with our plates. If it’s cloned, they’ve put them on an identical car. Photo taken from the back so you can’t see the driver.

If he wasn't there he should appeal! Can he prove he was at home with the kids?

PlanDeRaccordement · 26/09/2021 23:41

Are you sure it is your car though? I agree with pp that it sounds suspiciously like your plates have been cloned. Criminals will choose same make, model and colour car as the one they need plates for and then clone plates from a victim who is up to date on insurance and MOT.

It is unlikely that he is lying about being home as he has the children and his mum as alibi/witnesses.

I have never heard of speed cameras having the wrong date and time. If he is sure he wasn’t there and the children and his mum remember him being there, then I’d challenge the speeding fine and get my plate changed.

Yes, that's how cloning works.

It would be a bit pointless to use cloned plates from a green volvo on a red mini.

I was hit by a driver with cloned plates a few weeks ago.

Same colour and make as the car with the original plates. The police say they do this to avoid detection and becoming more common.
