Delivery people who don’t ring doorbells!

I’ve missed two deliveries due to delivery people not ringing the doorbell. One yesterday where the parcel was tracked and would be delivered between X and Y so I made sure I would be in. Suddenly I receive a notification saying delivery was attempted but there was no safe place to leave the parcel. I was surprised to see a picture of the side of my house and path with my bathroom window open. My front door is at the side and the bathroom is next to it and my husband had opened the window when he got home. Both myself and my husband were in and no one rung the doorbell. I have a ring doorbell as well which is wired into the mains so it records everyone who rings the doorbell. I don’t have a door knocker on my front door either.

Today I receive a notification from Royal Mail that I have missed a delivery. I wasn’t expecting a delivery but I had been sat with my toddler in the living room and again no one rang the doorbell.

I know what you mean. I think some drivers must be on such a tight schedule they have zero time to wait.

I was sitting on the sofa, saw a man walk by then again less than a minute later, I got a notification that my Amazon had been delivered, it was in the wood store, the location I had indicated in case I was out! He certainly never rang the bell in the time frame.
AnotherDelphinium · 25/09/2021 12:37

I have exactly the same, I used to have it on my ring doorbell at the old house, and now I have it on the doorbell at the new house.

They’ll dash up, tap the door and either just leave it on the doorstep or walk off with it after 10 seconds. I used to share the footage on social media tagging the company and requesting they informed their drivers to use the doorbell, that being what it was there for and everything.

TheHouseIsOnFire · 25/09/2021 12:40

I’ve been sat in my DB’s garden when his ring doorbell goes off, it’s me ringing it an hour before!!

I’d get a normal doorbell and see if the same thing keeps happening.

MrsRetreiver · 25/09/2021 12:44

Like @DrManhattan I imagine most drivers are on an exceptionally tight schedule and if there’s a safe place to leave a parcel or it looks like no one is in (no car, no lights on etc) they’re tempted to make up time. Completely the fault of the company.

AlCalavicci · 25/09/2021 12:46

I had one a few weeks ago , they said there had been no answer , on that day I had been at home painting some woodwork (downstairs ) with gloss that had a very high VOC so all of my doors and windows were wide open and yet apparently I was not in ! Confused

Today I receive a notification from Royal Mail that I have missed a delivery. I wasn’t expecting a delivery but I had been sat with my toddler in the living room and again no one rang the doorbell.

Go carful with them there are lots of scams around saying you need to pay xx to get parcel redelivered / text when you are in for redelivery ( so they will know when you are not in )

Slayduggee · 25/09/2021 12:48

We have the chimber plugged into the socket near to the door. It rings very loudly. Video footage shows them walking up the path and not ringing the doorbell so getting a normal doorbell won’t help as if they don’t press the doorbell!

It must take longer to leave the card than to just knock though. Makes no sense.

I have a sticker on my door saying "please ring the bell" because my hearing is bad bit they still do the stupid tap tap run

Slayduggee · 25/09/2021 12:50

There was my car on the drive and the downstairs bathroom window was open (which is right next to the front door) There was no lights on as it was still light.

I deliver for amazon and I’ll tend to automatically deliver to any ‘safe space’ where possible, before ringing the doorbell.

The amount of people who take ages to come to the door, or try to engage you in conversation about what might potentially be in the package (they have ordered!) as they can’t remember.
Asking am I sure it’s for them, looking at me like I’m crazy (despite their name and address being on the parcel).
It’s very frustrating! But I would always ring/knock and wait for a minute or 2.

Drivers always prefer to make the delivery, as the full timers are financially penalised for any missed deliveries and us part timers have to schlep all the way back to the depo (often miles out of our way) unpaid, with the parcel to return it.

For Royal Mail, of course, this isn’t the case…..

Peanutsandchilli · 25/09/2021 12:58

The Amazon drivers that leave them on the doorstep, in full view, piss me off. We're now in the habit of removing them for safekeeping and leaving a note for our neighbours, as we once witnessed a bloke in a van sending kids out to nick the boxes off the doorstep. They were literally following the Amazon guy.

SpacePotato · 25/09/2021 13:22

They have recently started doing this to me. I didn't mind as much when they rang thr bell and started walking off but acknowledged you when you opened the door, but when they just dump them on the step without knocking or ringing the bell pisses me off too.

billyt · 25/09/2021 13:41

As I was parking my car on Thursday evening I noticed a bloke delivering what looked like a takeaway to the house opposite. (The house is actually two flats). He knocked the door, put the package down and left.

When I was going out again 15 mins later the package was still on the doorstep!

I walked across and rang both the doorbells. When one of my neighbours came to the door I said what I saw. They hadn't heard the door being knocked. That is what the doorbells are for, because being first floor they wouldn't have heard a knock. And they hadn't been notified of the delivery being due or delivered.

So not a great experience of that delivery person. Why, when you're delivering hot food, do you not at least check someone is going to open the frigging door to see it's there?

rslsys · 25/09/2021 13:46

But I thought no one on MN answered the doorbell anyway 🤦🏻

baggingareaunattended · 25/09/2021 15:06

Our Hermes man thinks that those ring doorbells only record you if you press them? He doesn't like being recorded he says so only knocks. I don't know if this is a I don't want to be shared on social media or something more dodgy maybe he's wanted? I thought you were only allowed to record your own property, but across the road seem to put up numerous videos of people near their house me walking my dog.

Slayduggee · 25/09/2021 16:17

You can either set up your Ring doorbell to record every time someone rings the doorbell or every time it senses motion. 99% I have it set up to record only when pressed. I only set it up to detect motion when I have delivery people who claim to deliver but who don’t! My front door is at the side of my house so it only records my flower bed and side fence.

I have an ordinary door bell. It infuriates me that the postman and delivery drivers only ever knock on the door - or the glass panels! If I'm in the back garden I can still hear the bell as I have a 2nd chime box plugged in at the back but I can't hear if they just rap on the door. I can only assume that they think most doorbells don't work.

JustLyra · 25/09/2021 16:58

I have a note on the door asking them to ring the bell and they still don’t. It really annoys me as you just don’t hear the tap-tap of a knock from the living room.

PerseverancePays · 25/09/2021 17:12

I had a text from royal mail today to say I wasn't in when I was. I know they didn't ring the intercom to come up because IT'S VERY LOUD! Weirdly the link they sent doesn't work either so I can't reschedule for their postman to do another pretend delivery. I'm so sick of chasing up parcels from delivery people saying I'm not home. I'm nearly always home!

inkhopper · 25/09/2021 17:13

Put a clear notice on the door asking delivery people to press the bell or you won't hear.

Slayduggee · 25/09/2021 17:15

Delivery has arrived and he rang the door bell this time!

Grenlei · 25/09/2021 17:21

I feel your pain OP, YANBU.

My issue with delivery people is admittedly slightly different. Most of ours ring the bell ,(normal one not a Ring) but - and this is the bit I find super irritating - also bang on the glass panel of the front door.

Now I can understand thinking oh, maybe the bell didn't work so I'll knock. Except a) you can hear the bell ringing from outside and b) they bang on the glass immediately after they ring the bell. So it's basically DingDong. BANGBANGBANG

I find banging on the glass really rude, our front door has a centre glass panel but that's only about 1/4 of the door surface area, they could knock anywhere else but never do. And I have a letterbox but that's never used either. Instead every time they use the bloody glass!

Softfresh · 25/09/2021 17:30

The same thing happened to me with parcel force this week. Notification to give an hour time slot for delivery, I was pottering about at the door sorting recycling and bits and bobs. Text message to say that delivery was attempted but unsuccessful? Um okay that's a lie. Told to read the instructions on the car left to rearrange delivery, what card?

I went online with my tracking number and rearranged delivery for the following day. Same thing happened again! My order is now to be collected from the local depot! I received a card about 2 hours later to state my delivery attempt was unsuccessful. Not once did they actually attempt the delivery. Angry

probsouting · 25/09/2021 17:35

Don't get me started. Hermes are the worst.

They constantly knock when I say use the doorbell.

Won't use the doorbell due to covid. Confirm they will phone me for deliveries.

Now they have taken it upon themselves to open my door. I have told them multiple times to not open my door, they say it won't happen again and they do it next time.

I'm sick of them. I wish people would stop using them so I didn't have to put up with it.

They're using a door handle but not the bell because of covid?!

Slayduggee · 25/09/2021 20:12

@probsouting you guessed it correct it was Hermes. Every time I order something and it’s due to be delivered by Hermes my heart sinks.
