To ask how much caffeine is too much

I’m curious…how much tea/ coffee do you drink in a day? If, like me, you are at around 6 cups, does it make you feel a bit weird and like you should really cut down a bit?

If you cut down, is your sleep, skin and mood better??

I used to drink loads of coffee and quite a bit of tea from teen years. Kept that up until I was about 42-43ish, and that went out the window. The caffeine really started to bother me if I had more than a cup, making me anxious, jittery, etc, and if I had any caffeine after 4pm I wouldn't sleep that night. I'm 48 now and I avoid caffeine entirely. Only herbal tea for me.

dementedpixie · 24/09/2021 19:43

Around 3 cups a day. 2 in the am and 1 mid afternoon

Thanks. I’m supposed to be doing that too for health reasons but, well, it is addictive…

Once you get through the withdrawals you won't miss it. Switch to herbal tea and in a few days you'll be fine.

Notcontent · 24/09/2021 19:47

I think it depends on what you are drinking - big difference between a double shot coffee and a weak cup of tea…

Whentheydontmeanwhattheysay · 24/09/2021 19:51

I have about 5 spoons of caffeinated and 9 decafs a day!
I have tried to cut down but seem to be getting worse.

Caffeine withdrawal headaches are agony but I think, after adding up how much I drink, I need to give it another try.

KaptainKaveman · 24/09/2021 19:51

2 big cups of tea in the morning and one in the afternoon. Any more and I get the jitters...

Recessed · 24/09/2021 19:54

I would say 6 is a LOT but I think different people must have different levels of sensitivity to caffeine. If I drank that much I'd be a dehydrated insomniac. I drink one cup first thing and two cups of tea (one around mid-day and the other after the DC have gone to bed). Any more than that and I really feel the effects. My skin dries out/fine lines much more obvious, struggle to sleep, constant trips to the loo and lethargy the following day.

addictedtotheflats · 24/09/2021 19:56

I have 4 at the absolute maximum and even then sometimes I start to feel a bit wired, plus it makes me wee like theres no tomorrow 🙈Personally for me 6 is a lot but my mum must drink 6-8 and is fine.

CaffeineAndCrochet · 24/09/2021 20:03

Just one cup of coffee a day for me right now. I did drink more, but find that I'm sleeping better since cutting down.

The withdrawal was crazy though - not only headaches, but I spent an entire day weak, dizzy and throwing up. After going through that, there's no way I want to risk going through it again, so I'll be sticking to just one cup a day.

Hamsteronrollerblades · 24/09/2021 20:06

I drink loads of it. Makes no obvious difference. Occasionally I give it up and have a headache for a few days then it’s just like normal. Never improved sleep or skin

WhatMattersMost · 24/09/2021 20:17

One cup first-thing in the morning (two shots). I can't do any more now, because otherwise a) I get anxiety and intrusive thoughts and mood swings, and b) I don't sleep at night.

Still love coffee though!

Buttetflybookkeeper · 24/09/2021 20:20

I was drinking a LOT in lockdown and it was stopping me from sleeping. I was also ridiculously anxious.

I still have it now, but I knocked the coffee on the head. I have tea and diet coke, but much less that I was having.

TAKESNOSHITSHIRLEY · 24/09/2021 20:23

i dont drink tea or coffee, i never have

but i do like a lot of pepsi or coke in cans. say 3-4 cans a day

i really dont know if it has the same amount of caffeine as coffee though

Chicchicchicchiclana · 24/09/2021 20:27

If I drink any coffee after 12 noon my insomnia goes even more nuts than it is usually.

My mind is genuinely boggled/fascinated when we go out to dinner with people and they are ordering double espressos at 10.30pm and claim they will be asleep as soon as their head hits the pillow!

drpaddington · 24/09/2021 20:31

I used to have 3-4 large cups of coffee a day, and maybe 2-3 cups of tea. I've switched to decaf, apart from when I've got a coffee somewhere that doesn't offer decaf so maybe one drink week or so. And an occasional coke/ Pepsi. Apart from the first few days of horrible headaches it's been fine. I used to think I was really tired without caffeine but actually I don't think I feel any different without it really!

egglette · 24/09/2021 20:31

I remember in my first office job we had a tea lady, and I thought it would be polite to accept a drink every round...genuinely couldn't work out why I was going home with heart palpitations - just thought I was a bit nervous Grin

I leave it at one or max two teas or coffees a day now, and not after 3 or 4pm latest.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 24/09/2021 20:36

I don't know but have switched to decaff after lunch and am definitely sleeping better

Rizzoli123 · 24/09/2021 20:38

None I will have occasional cup of tea as I don't like coffee. I normally have decaff. My gp said tea dehydrates you

Rizzoli123 · 24/09/2021 20:40

Mainly drink water and have a fizzy pop once every few days. Mainly caffeine free coke or cherry.

WeAreTheHeroes · 24/09/2021 20:42

I cut out caffeine relatively recently. Noticed no difference at all! That said, I typically I have one caffeinated coffee or tea a day now. Sometimes I really notice that the caffeine gives me the kick I need when it wouldn't have done before.

Smarshian · 24/09/2021 20:45

I drink a LOT of caffeine. Around 6-8 coffees, plus 4 teas and 1-2 Coke Zero a day. I started having loose bowels and have put it down to excess caffeine, the last 2 weeks I have tried to cut down to 2-3 coffees, 1 Coke Zero and 1-2 teas.

Goingbackto5oh5 · 24/09/2021 20:50

I love coffee more than tea but I switch between the two. I go through 4/5 mugs on a normal day. I can go without tbh, I don't get withdrawals, I just find the smell of coffee very comforting and a strong cup of tea after a meal is a must in our household Grin

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 24/09/2021 20:50

Gallons of tea here. Don’t care.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 24/09/2021 20:51

Gave up coffee a few years ago, ans never been that into coke/ Pepsi or any fizzy drinks. Tea is the hill I’ll die on though!
