Are expensive children's shoes necessary?

Is there any actual scientific and/or medical evidence for putting children into certain types of shoe? I'm talking about shoes for daily wear, the sort you'd get if you could only have one pair of shoes per child.

I see four options:

  1. expensive Clarks type shoes
  2. cheap supermarket type shoes
  3. barefoot type shoes
  4. second hand shoes

YABU: Here is a link to some evidence about the importance of a certain type of shoe for developing feet.

YANBU: I have no evidence to indicate that any particular style of shoe is healthiest for developing feet.

I'm genuinely curious. I'm happy to pay extra if it is important. I can't find anything online though. Just anecdotes and marketing.

Clarks definitely aren't worth it, not anymore. The fitting they offer is often below par, the choice (especially for girls) is fairly limited. I get shoes for my DDs from Next or M&S, somewhere between option 1 and 2 and have had no issues.
