AIBU to think hen/stag dos have become ridiculous!

Hen and stag do’s used to be a cheap night out. Bar/nightclub cheap and cheerful 😀

AIBU to think it’s ridiculous expecting people to fork out for weekends away or week away abroad (pre COVID)
Why is it expected for guests to fork out a couple hundred quid to celebrate you getting married?
When I had my hen do I had a £15 pp booze cruise over 30+ ladies. Cheep and cheerful bloody amazing night. No one was left out because of finances.
I’ve just been invited on 2 hen dos each one costing approximately £300 (£400 when you include all the added extras)
I’ve declined both
I would never except my friends to fork out that much to celebrate ME! It’s so arrogant!

What do you all think?

Don't go then

My hen do was 8 of us, meal and pub crawl then three of us left went to a nightclub. A few people drove as I don't live where they live. I didn't want to subject anyone to an expensive few days away where people didn't really know each other. Saying that, DH had a weekend away but it was a uk city break which just involved cheap drinking!

Poppetts1234 · 23/09/2021 18:48

I’m not
I just think things are just so over the top.
It never used to be like this

And btw that was only a few weeks ago

Pedalpushers · 23/09/2021 18:52

It's not the money for me (which is always just relative to if you can afford/want to prioritise it) more the notion of going away for the weekend to play naff party games, icebreakers and pin the penis with a load of people I barely know. Hen dos should be organised so that people can drop in and out if needed and escape if not having a good time.

FionnulaTheCooler · 23/09/2021 18:52

Even worse when you're invited to the hen do to try to drive down the cost per head of the expensive posh house with hot tub etc the bride to be had rented for the weekend, but didn't get an invite to the actual wedding. I declined to go.

Wow, that's just bloody rude!!! I wouldn't have gone either!
Summersun2020 · 23/09/2021 19:00

YABU, you don’t have to go. I love an excuse for a girls weekend away.

Liverbird77 · 23/09/2021 19:03

YANBU. I hate them. They put so much pressure on people. I didn't have any kind of hen do.
See also baby showers.

TeapotCollection · 23/09/2021 19:03

Totally agree

A work colleague went to Madrid a couple of years ago, cost them all a fortune and all they saw was pubs

Baby showers are horrible- we call them begging parties

Yes !

Don't get the hate for baby showers though? Don't you just use it as a chance to celebrate with friends and eat cake?

HungryHippo11 · 23/09/2021 19:07

YANBU
I would rather spend my money and annual leave on a holiday with my family, than a weekend with people I don't know playing drinking games.

HungryHippo11 · 23/09/2021 19:08

I don't mind baby showers, assuming they're low key e.g. afternoon tea or lunch. And don't include too many party games.

Tiredmum100 · 23/09/2021 19:08

I must be in the minority but I love a good hen weekend! I've been on some great ones abroad, Barcelona, palma, great memories with great friends 🤷‍♀️

DontWiltMySpinachPlease · 23/09/2021 19:09

I have and will continue to do the full weekends for my very close friends as its basically a girls weekend away! Not sure I would fork out the same amount for someone I wasn't as close to, though.

spooney21 · 23/09/2021 19:29

I love a hen party! It's a great excuse to have a child free girly weekend away.

Beachbabe1 · 23/09/2021 19:36

Totally agree OP! Luckily I haven't been invited to any yet! 🤣 Would rather spend that kind of money on myself and my family
