Scottish uni fees advice

Posting for traffic as a bit anxious about this:

Can anyone give advice. My son got to the end of third year at uni but due to mental health problems during the year, failed to sit most of the exams and would have to repeat third year if he wanted to continue. He admitted that he hated the course and that he wanted to leave. He applied for a totally different degree, wanting to start again and thought he would get another 2 years funding (SAAS give 4 plus 1).

He’s started the course but had an email saying he won’t get course fees as it’s a second degree. I’m assuming this is because he completed 3 years. Does anyone think there could be an appeal on medical grounds?

Also, if he has to self fund, will it still be £1800 per year and would he still be eligible for a student loan? Thanks

Hello - I’m not sure about the appeal but the fees will be the same price and he will get a student loan.

I did this, I dropped out after second year. When I went back, I had to self-fund years 1&2, but 3&4 were funded as I had not claimed for these the first time

Did he supply medical evidence to prove why he couldn’t complete the year or leave the course? I left due to pregnancy problems and only needed a brief letter form my GP. I would contact SAAS because if it is a repeat year he would be covered but that might also apply to a change in course.
