To report British Gas for a data breach

I checked my bank this morning after setting up a direct debit to come out on 23rd of every month and noticed my gas and electric dd hadn’t come out.
I used the message facility to ask if there was a problem, they said no it’s fine, we have taken it.
Fast forward a couple of hours and I have a phone call from my ex husband, wondering why British Gas have taken money from his account for my house (he hasn’t lived there for 5 years)!
I don’t know how they have his bank details as I don’t…they did text him to say ask your ex for the money back! They have now deleted this message from the chat Hmm
He has tried calling, as have I and also text to ask for an urgent call, as the debit has taken him in to his overdraft and to be honest, we’re not on terms to be discussing our personal finances.
Anyone have any advice on how he can get his money back and who we report this to, as so far British Gas are being no help.
Ex husband is with them for his gas and electric too at his address, so doesn’t want o mess up his direct debits by claiming it through the dd indemnity.

DD indemnity is the way to go. He should have two DDs on his account with two different references. They will only have to claim against the incorrect one.

This is the quickest way to get him out of overdraft. It’s not ideal, but it’s the least pain.

british gas are a shower of shit.

my ex took over the DD's for his house, and the online account 4 years ago, we changed the email addresses and everything over before he changed the pw.

I'm STILL getting emails in his name to my email account from them 4yrs later asking for his meter readings...etc

Barclaycard credited my payment (with my reference number) to my husbands account.
Called me a liar when I said I'd made the payment, and after about half a dozen calls from me to barclaycard and my bank, eventually phoned my husband to ask for permission to reclaim the miss allocated funds.
Neither of us have a barclaycard anymore!

If the gas market easnt in such turmoil at the moment, I'd say move supplier. As it is, I'd be very polite, but very firm, that they have messed up and need to rectify it. Actually your husband might be best placed to do this, as he is the one missing money...... you have benefited from their mistake.

Watch the billing like a hawk.
