What is wrong with my fingernails

Posting for traffic sorry! Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this.

I had a baby 3 months ago and a fair few of my fingernails are bending/curling over my fingers. I don't think they were before, definitely not pre pregnancy at least.

I've seen lots of scary things online about clubbed fingertips and bent nails but my fingers don't look swollen like that, they're normal my nails are just bending.

My diet has been pretty bad compared to pre pregnancy, I sometimes only eat once a day and then have chocolate in the evening (and coffee throughout the day) as I just don't have much of an appetite/don't find time to eat. I'm also exclusively breastfeeding. Could it be vitamin related?

I haven't seen GP as getting an appointment is a nightmare and if I tell the receptionist it's for bent fingernails I doubt I would be seen anyway.

Pics of the worst offending nail attached but a fair few of them are looking like this.

Vitamin and Nutritional Deficiencies If your body is not getting the right balance of vitamins and minerals, your nails will curl this way...

VirgilStarkwell · 22/09/2021 23:36

Please get checked. Could be your lungs.

Tulips15 · 22/09/2021 23:36

Get a GP appt Asap.

Lasttimeneveragain · 22/09/2021 23:38

Anemia causes problems with your nails.

ShaneTheThird · 22/09/2021 23:42

Could be a whole lot of things from serious to minor vitamin deficiency but you need to contact your go for a blood test to rule everything out.

I did see this when I was looking and it scared me but those pictures all seemed to show clubbed fingers and I really don't think mind are I think its just my nails. I will try and get a GP appointment though

I did think this was quite likely. My diet is awful so seems possible I am definitely going to try eating more. I will try and get a GP appointment but I know they're not doing non urgent blood tests at the moment anyway

I suspect many women have significant deficiencies after birth and BFing. I did and it caused me problems for years until I got to the bottom of it. Please try to eat well as a starting point. Your body is under a lot of pressure recovering from pregnancy and producing milk.

RobertaFirmino · 22/09/2021 23:56

You really must insist on the GPS advice here. You might be able to email the surgery with these pics. It is highly likely that it's just nutritional but clubbed nails sometimes indicate serious illness. Please get them looked at, don't put it off.

RobertaFirmino · 22/09/2021 23:56

Sorry, I meant the GP, not a sat nav system!

Piggybuttons · 23/09/2021 11:15

Thank you, I will see a GP but am going to make a big effort to improve my diet and take some postnatal vitamins too

My nails do this a bit, because I have quite bad asthma.
Not ever been as bad as this though! Definitely see a doctor, nails are a great indicator of something deeper going on.

MrsTesfaye · 23/09/2021 11:26

Mine are the exact same so I just stopped growing them and keep them short, really worried there is something wrong with me now judging by these replies!

sloutside · 23/09/2021 12:13

They need to be looked at. You could phone and ask for a telephone consultation if they can't see you in person. Or email a picture and ask for the GP to look at this.

Mineral deficiency?

You can’t breastfeed and eat once a day and live off coffee and chocolate. You need a varied diet, more carbs than normal, fruit, veg, calcium, lots of water. I supplement as well (multivit, D, calcium, magnesium).

Doesn’t look like a club nail to me, club nails are about changes to the nail bed / top end, not the bottom. This looks like a weak / thin nail, which sounds like mineral deficiency. Not a medical expert though.

bilbodog · 23/09/2021 12:38

Please eat properly when you are breast feeding and drink enough liquids!

Sahara123 · 23/09/2021 13:01

Mine did this after my first pregnancy . She’s 33 now and they’re still the same ! I just don’t let them get too long, it’s a bit annoying but not much else I can do !

TweetyPieBird · 23/09/2021 13:05

If you’re not eating enough calories then you’re probably malnourished. Vitamin deficiencies can affect your nails. This is a sign that you’re damaging yourself internally. Please eat 3 decent meals a day. You need to nourish yourself in order to nourish your breast fed baby.
