To think some life coaches are glorified MLMs

Not sure if AIBU because I haven't used a life coach and maybe some are really good? but came across someone lately who said she transformed her life by going on a very expensive life coaching course who now is looking for others to get coaching with her to similarly make loadsa money, and her course was also very expensive- I'm talking thousands of pounds. Made me think the whole thing is like a MLM/ pyramid scheme.

was it the life coach school with a woman with the initials BC? Or KL? those ones seem verrrrrrry MLM-y.

morepatiencerequired · 22/09/2021 13:08

Some great life coaches out there. Sounds like your experience is with an mlm type thing tho. Think of it like any other 'product'. Are there good vitamins/oils/makeup? Do they need to be an mlm? No, but can they be turned into one? Probably

DeepaBeesKit · 22/09/2021 13:11

Not even glorified!

Life coaches.... encouraging women to become life coaches and fleece other women for loads of money training them to be life coaches....

None of these life coaches have had long, successful careers in other occupations so its not clear how they can tell you how to.

yellowgingham · 22/09/2021 13:13

I'm sure there are some great ones, but the only person I know who became a life coach was one of the most negative and pessimistic people I've ever met! And this wasn't after he'd been "transformed" by doing a course, he was just as negative and pessimistic as before.

Annoyedanddissapointed · 22/09/2021 13:15

It IS an mlm not "glorified mlm". It is an actual plain and simple mlm.

Annoyedanddissapointed · 22/09/2021 13:16

I actually think some are actual pyramids, not even just mlm

mogsrus · 22/09/2021 13:18

What do these people do between 9& 5 everyday?

FourTeaFallOut · 22/09/2021 13:19

Life coaching is one of those things were people spend the most money and make the most money when they are training. You hardly ever meet someone who recoups the cost without conning some other fool into joining your tribe.

mogsrus · 22/09/2021 13:24

I don't really understand what "they" do?

undecided2022 · 22/09/2021 13:26

I've been wondering this. I have a friend who is now a life coach and she's now encouraging others to sign up with her coach to become a coach too. Shit! Hadn't occurred to me it's quite mlmy 😔

Annoyedanddissapointed · 22/09/2021 13:27

@mogsrus

I don't really understand what "they" do?
They get you to buy coaching programme they did. Then these "coaches" will do the same and so on
overnightangel · 22/09/2021 13:38

Any good life coach would tell you not to get a life coach cos it’s a scam

mogsrus · 22/09/2021 13:43

So they do absolutely nothing but get paid for it,yes it's a scam

SudokuWillNotSaveYou · 22/09/2021 13:48

Yes, in general, ask yourself what ANYONE who advertises as a life coach is really “offering” that you shouldn’t be getting instead from:

  • a professional mentor who actually knows your profession
  • a trained and certified therapist or counselor or psychologist or psychiatrist if you need “help sorting out your life” (the psychiatrist if you also need medication)

At best, the life coach will offer you generic advice for £££. At worst, they’ll try to hook you into an MLM for £££.

Poetrypatty · 22/09/2021 13:54

Interesting others have encountered this and reading all the comments. Yes something like a paid by the hour professional mentor I have never encountered but could be good. Even perhaps life coaches by the hour, but you don't know what you're getting, maybe if it's word of mouth.

But this was a big scheme asking people to shell out thousands with very little info really about what it entailed other than how rich that person had suddenly got and really it felt like more of a pyramid as pp said.

Must be annoying for the real ones - one I know has been in practise for years she was extreme senior in HR in a corporate and has genuinely helped friends with career advice and life planning. She’s older and very professional.

Poetrypatty · 22/09/2021 14:30

Yes it must make life difficult for the 'legit' ones.

There's life coaches and executive coaches- executive coaches generally have a qualification and are career oriented.
