OFCOM's new 'banned terms' list

Not an AIBU at all, but just noting that OFCOM have listed a new set of labels that they deem insulting, not be used in the media in a pejorative way. I have seen quite a few on here recently.

Karen: A pejorative term for an obnoxious, angry, entitled, and often racist middle-aged white woman

Gammon: A term referring to the colour of a person's flushed face when expressing their strong opinions, associated particularly with right-wing brexiteers

Libtard: A word used to describe people on the political left who are perceived to be easily offended, 'woke' and overly politically correct

Snowflake: Someone perceived as too sensitive, easily offended and outraged

Feminazi: A term used to describe an outspoken and radical feminist

Boomer: An insult for baby boomers who are perceived to be out of touch and dismissive of younger generations

Remoaner: Someone against Brexit perceived to be constantly complaining about it

Terf: A 'trans-exclusionary radical feminist' - used to describe people who reject the assertion that trans women are women and are opposed to trans-rights legislation

At least that is even-handed.

HarrietsChariot · 22/09/2021 11:30

The thing is, most of those terms are widely understood and people know exactly what they mean. (OK, never heard of Terf or Libtard.) Boomer is just the name of a generation of people, surely it's only offensive in context? Like Gen X or Millenial. Feminazi is underused but a valid term.

Macncheeseballs · 22/09/2021 11:30

3 are for women, only one for men, the others neutral, so yes am definitely in favour

AgnesNaismith · 22/09/2021 11:31

Is there a link to it? Good list.

Only "Karen" is aimed exclusively at women. The others are all neutral (because men can be feminists).
AgnesNaismith · 22/09/2021 11:32

Feminazi is underused but a valid term

Valid in what way @HarrietsChariot?

BabyofMine · 22/09/2021 12:28

The term for that ‘generation’ was always baby boomer, not boomer. Boomer on its own definitely has specific connotations and presumably you can still use the term “baby boomer”.

Bloose · 22/09/2021 12:33

Very pleased Terf is on there!

Maybe they will add cis next.

littlepeas · 22/09/2021 12:36

I feel like some should probably be on there too - based on the other terms on the list - it’s usually used with disdain.

Crikey yes. Hate cis.

Woke! Not some!
MurielSpriggs · 22/09/2021 12:38

Speaking as a remoaner, I like the term and shall continue to identify as one.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 22/09/2021 12:38

Generally good but I’m not quite sure why you can’t say boomer as it’s the name of a generation. Unless it’s that you have to say “baby boomer”

wink1970 · 22/09/2021 12:42

Maybe they will add cis next.

Yes, I'd like that added too.

Pleased to see Gammon & Karen added, in particular; they are flung around on here a lot.

It specifies not be used in the media in a pejorative way so presumably you could use 'boomer' in a descriptive way.
TheOrigRights · 22/09/2021 13:00

@AgnesNaismith

Feminazi is underused but a valid term

Valid in what way @HarrietsChariot?

The only valid way to use Nazi is in the context of Nazism
sst1234 · 22/09/2021 13:04

Never heard of libtard but sounds very apt in describing the professionally offended.

amusedbush · 22/09/2021 13:05

Gammon is a hilariously apt word though, I will continue to use and enjoy it myself Grin

Bloose · 22/09/2021 13:11

The boomer thing is probably because the "OK Boomer" meme, it's dismissive and nasty.

Ninjawannabe · 22/09/2021 13:16

sst1234 libtard is a merger of Liberal and Retard, so I don't think its acceptable to use in any context. Do you?

VelvetChairGirl · 22/09/2021 13:36

bout time TERF was delt with its nothing but a insult to try and shut women up and make them frightened to speak up about their rights

VelvetChairGirl · 22/09/2021 13:37

@Bloose

Very pleased Terf is on there!

Maybe they will add cis next.

hopefully

Glad to see the list.

seaandsandcastles · 22/09/2021 13:44

Ridiculous. It’s not acceptable to police people’s language.

So you see no purpose at all for OFCOM or other regulatory bodies?
