Is there a motorway junction worse than M1 J31

I absolutely bloody hate it, it's so dangerous. You get on and then immediately have to cross 2 lanes if you don't want to go down the M18, then cars already on the M1 are looking to cross into the left lanes to exit the M18, so you get this criss crossing mayhem that always gives me a squeaky bum. It's surely got to be one of the most poorly thought out junctions in the UK

Any challenges out there who can beat it???

Not a motorway but the A4053 is a fucking deathtrap.

M1 Junction 6A is bad, not because of the layout particularly, but because of the idiots who leave it till the last possible second before swerving across to get to the M25, then don't know whether they want to go left or right.

The M25 generally has too many junctions which mean people are constantly swerving between lanes. They should reduce it to just junctions for the motorways.

PermanentTemporary · 21/09/2021 12:17

LOVE THIS THREAD ALREADY

Personally hate the M25/A21 junction but I don't think it's as bad as these.

lockdownmadnessdotcom · 21/09/2021 12:19

I think any junction where they send you left to go right or vice versa, can cause accidents as they take people by surprise.

Examples - M3/M27 junction - if you are coming from the "north", you turn left for Bournemouth and right for Portsmouth, which is just wrong.

I think the M40/M42 junction is similar, and so is J6 off the M3 coming into Basingstoke.

Any junction which requires lots of lane changing can be dangerous or with very short slip roads which don't give you time to sort yourself out. For example when you leave the M5 at Exeter to go onto the A30/A303, you also have traffic joining the M5, but it's a very long lane/slip road so everyone has time.

BogRollBOGOF · 21/09/2021 12:23

I raise you M6 j7... accessed from the inside of the roundabout to get on northbound and off southbound.

I still remember my friend's expletives as I suddenly warned him with 15 seconds notice Grin

I'm sure some M8 experts will be along soon...

Dobbyhasnomaster · 21/09/2021 12:24

Getting on the M5 northbound from Aztec West. Have to cross THREE LANES of traffic in about 200m to be able to get onto the motorway. So stressful.

BogRollBOGOF · 21/09/2021 12:25

M42 j9/ toll road split is also confusing. It looks like j9 is going off, but the M42 also turns off with it. Stay right on what looks like the main carriageway and it will cost you...

QuentinBunbury · 21/09/2021 12:26

Yes dobby
Also M5 at 18/19 with queues of traffic trying to get off at portishead, joining from Bristol and Wales and poor visibility on the bridge. Terrifying

ChrissyPlummer · 21/09/2021 12:27

M6 junction 17, accidents there weekly. No real idea why as it doesn’t seem particularly bad but if I’m going to work and there’s an accident, 9/10 it’ll be there.

I used to get the the m1 all the time (but come on a couple of junctions earlier) and don’t remember it being squeaky bum so I just google mapped it. You come on the m1 on 2 lanes, one of which goes completely then you have 4 lanes the left one turns in to m18. Pretty standard motorway isn’t it? No crossing of two lanes!
Hernameisdeborah · 21/09/2021 12:29

Junction 43 of the M1, where it meets the M621. Traffic criss-crossing each other as they move right to stay on the M1 or go over towards Leeds. That annoys me.
Junction 11 of the M1 always seems to be the Junction of Boy Racers.
Love this thread already!!

Yes! It's very easy to go wrong there.
WoozySnoozy · 21/09/2021 12:31

The M5 at almonsbury where you can end up going over the River Severn by accident if you're in the wrong lane.

You can guarantee the M6 Junction 16 through to 21, every bloody Friday there is an accident and the damn thing is closed.
TangoWhiskyAlphaTango · 21/09/2021 12:31

Fucking M6 from M54 link alllllllll the way down to Wednesbury - have to do this journey a few times a week and its an utter bloody misery.

Think thats the bit I'm thinking of.

I'm reading all these in an Alan Partridge voice.

notelegant · 21/09/2021 12:34

M27 Junction 12 eastbound - merging with the M275 with fast moving vehicles coming round a blind uphill bend - extremely dangerous and I avoid it at all costs.

Hernameisdeborah · 21/09/2021 12:37

@BloodyStupidJohnson Haha! This does appeal to my inner Alan!

depends which lane you get onto on the slip road. If you get on the left hand lane, then yes you do have to cross 2 lanes to stay on the M1, my point is you're having to navigate getting onto the M1 as other people are coming into the left hand lane to get off onto the M18.

BeQuietBrenda · 21/09/2021 12:42

Junction 12 where you merge into the M60 from the M62 . Its bad drivers mainly, but it's quite a short slip road and then those already on the M60 who want to come off at J13 try to get across to the left hand lane whilst the merging traffic is also trying to access the same lane. Added to this the lanes are very narrow. It's horrible.

Lockdownbear · 21/09/2021 12:44

The M8 has a few crackers.
On and off the fast lane. Two lanes join from the M80 and about a mile to get over to the 3rd lane before it becomes an of slip.

safariboot · 21/09/2021 12:46

www.roads.org.uk/badjunctions

That should cover most of them.

Sonarl · 21/09/2021 12:47

Has anyone said M25 / M3? Luckily you're rarely going fast enough to do any damage.

thenightsky · 21/09/2021 12:49

Junction 43 of the M1, where it meets the M621. Traffic criss-crossing each other as they move right to stay on the M1 or go over towards Leeds.

I immediately thought of this one too. Both sides of the road. And add in the bit where everyone is streaming off the M62 onto te M621/M1 ... carnage.

Rainbowheart1 · 21/09/2021 12:49

Yes, junction 25. The roundabout to get in and off it is so big with so many lanes you could build a house on it. If you didn’t know it and came off there it would be a bit daunting I would imagine.
