Coil gone missing!!

Hey everyone,

So around 7/8 months ago I had the mirena coil fitted to help with what the doctors think is pain from endometriosis (waiting for my last gynea appointment before surgery) and all was fine, my periods stopped for a while and then all of a sudden I’ve had 2 the last couple of months. I’ve thought nothing of it but I did mention to my partner and friend at the time that it was weird and that I almost felt like the coil wasn’t working as my hormones had settled down and my periods came back. Anyway fast forward to Wednesday of this week and I go for my first smear test and the doctor tells me she can’t see my coil strings and that due to the last day I had sex I couldn’t have any emergency contraception and I would need to now go on the mini pill to protect myself whilst I wait up to 6 weeks before having a scan to see if they can locate the coil. I’ve been feeling quite sick this week anyway possibly due to stress at work but now I’m starting to worry. Has this happened to anyone else? I had a period about 3 weeks ago but I’ve noticed some bloody discharge whilst wiping this week? And I almost feel like a heavy sensation in my vagina whilst I’m laying down! Any advice please?!

Not what you want to hear but mine fell out! GP replaced it but the second one did too ! I had them for extremely heavy flooding, and clearly it was so heavy they came out with it.

Pretty much the only option I have left now is hysterectomy but not sure i want that at moment.

Exactly the same for me.

Yet when I see gynae next month I'm begging for one!

It’s so frustrating isn’t it! I can’t have certain contraception cause of health issues so I’m quite limited but the first coil got lodged so I’m starting to think the coil isn’t any good for me! It’s just odd that I stopped having periods and now that they’ve started again the coil is gone! Makes me wonder how long ago it fell out and how long I’ve been having unprotected sex for! I mean I wouldn’t mind if I’m pregnant but my other half certainly will!

Are they sure it has gone? I had mirena and it was wonderful in terms of keeping my endometriosis under control ... until the point it was getting near the time to replace it when periods started again, and when I checked I couldn't find the strings. They had to scan to check what was going on: it was still there, but I couldn't feel the strings as it had been pushed out of place by a fibroid. It was so far up I ended up having to have it removed under general anaesthetic! Fibroids can give a heavy feeling - which may or may not be reassuring!

Mine has gone 'missing' but when I went for a scan it is up there still. I didn't start getting periods though, so perhaps yours has fallen out although the Dr I saw said it was very rare for them to come out completely undetected. I guess if you have very heavy periods that could happen though?

Hueandcry · 19/09/2021 20:55

I've only ever had one & it went awol. I had terrible pain in my side. Had to have it removed using ultrasound to locate it. Very painful & distressing experience & I've never had another one

Dutch1e · 19/09/2021 20:55

What happened to the good old diaphragm? I'm so sorry, I hope you get some answers

GUPIGUPI · 19/09/2021 20:57

Mine moved and I ended up pregnant with DS.

DingleyDel · 19/09/2021 21:01

Mine came out during a period. At least that’s what must have happened as it couldn’t be located! But they did say when they scanned me they can get lost up there, as it were.

Blueskythinking123 · 19/09/2021 21:06

Mine came out. I had a scan and X-Ray to confirm it had definitely gone!

Madsl96 · 19/09/2021 22:29

I’m currently on a 6-8 week waiting list for an internal scan to see if it is still there as I had no idea so it could be there I guess! Interesting comment about the fibroids though as I’ve never really thought about that. The coil has been pretty good at settling my heavy periods and controlling my pain (ish)! The nurse did say with heavy periods it is possible to expel it but when they started again they were relatively light Hmm all a bit confusing and frustrating that I have to wait so long for the scan (Thankyou covid) I’ll definitely look into the fibroid symptoms and what it is though!

Thankyou lovely ladies, it’s reassuring (kind of) to know I’m not the only one that’s been in this situation, I’m sure pre covid it would have been sorted much quicker I’m just a little frustrated and worried as I’ve got such a long wait for some answers and I have such irregular periods it’s difficult to know when I’ll need to test for pregnancy! My body doesn’t tend to handle hormones to well so we shall see if my other half likes me after a few weeks of the pill Grin
