To ask if your child's head is on the larger side

DS2 has always had a larger than average head. This was the reason I was having growth scans and they weren't going to let me go over due date.

He's turned 3 a couple of weeks ago and started at the nursery attached to the school. He loved the idea of this and was so excited to have a jumper like his brother.

The jumpers are too small for his head though! They are not easy to get on or off without hurting him, but are almost baggy elsewhere. It's the same with the next size up, as I had from his brother and tried that.

I've emailed the school to ask if there is anywhere else I can get the school jumpers as the supplier I've been told to use don't really care that he can't wear his jumper.

I'm sat here adding in material to his neckline as best I can without making it messy.

Anyone else ever had this?

Yes!
Both of mine have 98th percentile heads despite being only 50th percentile for weight.
My 5 year old has always had issues with neck holes not big enough and needing hats that are age 7-10 years now despite being 5

Morningstar66 · 19/09/2021 16:00

Yes both off the chart. It sucks especially once they grew out of toddler clothes with envelope necks or poppers at the shoulders. Mil has been kind enough to cut and sew a little slit on the seam in a couple of tops with a button. School starts next year but the plan is to do the same with them and have a hidden button if needed.

I'm trying to think positively. Big heads are associated with higher intelligence and reduced risk if Alzheimer's sooo....

Comedycook · 19/09/2021 16:02

Is there a school cardigan you could switch to instead of wearing a jumper?

Buttons294749 · 19/09/2021 16:03

Yep! DS, DH, me... the family curse!

bassackwards · 19/09/2021 16:04

Yes same problem here, my DC has a huge head in the 99th percentile. I usually just pull/stretch neck holes open with my hands before putting them on, which solves the problem

Mamette · 19/09/2021 16:05

Can you rip the seam and add buttons?

When my father and his brothers were at school back in days of yore they had to get caps specially made for them as the standard school caps didn’t fit them. I think it balanced out as they got older though.

GotToGoBye · 19/09/2021 16:07

Yes! My 6 year old. If I remember stretch them when they are wet out of machine (I don’t know if it really does any better than when dry).
Some jumpers have had to be cut on seam or just taken to charity shop.

In our school in 2 years they have V neck so I’m looking forward to that!

Bakingwithmyboys · 19/09/2021 16:08

Wow, thank you ladies.

I'm very sensitive at the moment and wanted to cry over his jumpers but it's so nice to know he's not the only one.

He's not liking going to nursery at the moment but only done a week. Currently refusing to wear the jumper and white t shirts. The t-shirts aren't a problem but the school like them to wear the jumpers.

What gets me is other jumpers he's had from the supermarket have been ok within his size of clothes (currently age 4-5 on a three year old and that's starting to get small! 😆) but these school ones are crap!

Both of mine have huge heads! So do I and so does exh (him most of all) so it was inevitable.

School hats that were “one size” never fitted beyond about yr 3. School jumpers are v neck, but generally jumpers and t shorts are tricky - Boden and the like are the worst. We used to call it a “Boden neck” and I wondered if posher people somehow have smaller heads???

applesandpears33 · 19/09/2021 16:12

Yes. It runs in my Dad's family and my DD has a large head.

Thecazelets · 19/09/2021 16:13

Yes. Had extra growth scans too, and he had to wear adult-sized hats and bike helmets as a toddler. Turns out it's just the way he's made, and as an adult he has the height and the size 13 feet to match. (He went to Cambridge, so Morningstar might be right!)

EllieSattler · 19/09/2021 16:15

DS needs 3-4 uniform to fit but he's in 5-6 so that I don't decapitate the poor bugger getting his jumper off. Uniform bloody drowns him and its still tight round his head. Lucky DD has a cardigan.

2bazookas · 19/09/2021 16:19

I always had that problem, so did my kids. We have large heads and need large hats because we have large brains :-)

I have been known to open a shoulder seam and attach velcro.

Labalabee · 19/09/2021 16:25

Just unpick the seam for a few inches, hem and add buttons or poppers. Dead easy. Would take 15 mins max.

MinnieMountain · 19/09/2021 16:52

Does his school sell the school badges separately? Then you could sew them onto jumpers you have chosen.

Tigger85 · 19/09/2021 17:11

My D's head has always been on the 99th centile. I gently stretch the necks on all his tops otherwise his head won't fit, we usually get tops in the size above what he actually is to have a larger head hole but still need to stretch the necks. His school have v neck jumper options which are better for him.

Member345787 · 19/09/2021 17:13

Same problem here with DS so we swapped to v neck school jumpers. I don't remember them being advertised in the promotional material for school uniform but available when I asked. Saved yanking DS' ears off every day. Funnily enough never noticed a problem with tshirts, guess they are just more stretchy?

Bakingwithmyboys · 19/09/2021 18:41

I've emailed them over the weekend to say they don't fit and what do they want me to do.

They have the one uniform supplier and as far as I'm aware no badges to sew on.

We’ve all got massive heads in the three0 family. My mum knotted all our school jumpers and my DC had v relaxed uniforms so it wasn’t an issue.

Yes to extra growth scans here. Yes to teen sized bike helmets for the mini micro scooter. I find sunhats almost impossible to buy, even shopping in men’s sizes.
