These spellings can’t be right surely?

Ds has just joined year one. Turned five in august so youngest in year. Consistently assessed as reading at expected level for his age. Still sounds out words, struggled with some blending etc. His books are mainly composed of sentences like ‘zip and zap went to the zoo’.

He’s been given his first lot of words to practice for spelling this week on some online platform. I assumed they would be linked with his reading ability. The explanatory sheet they sent home had the word ‘jog’ as the example.

Logged on today to find a list of ten words. First two were privilege and conscience. Immediately logged off.

Yabu - they sound perfectly reasonable for the first words a just turned five year old should be learning to spell, what’s wrong with you

Yanbu - there’s been some sort of mistake here

Yanbu. Yanbu at all.

SilverChainLink · 18/09/2021 14:16

There's got to be a mistake, surely

Sparklfairy · 18/09/2021 14:16

Clearly a mistake uploading i think!

CoronaPeroni · 18/09/2021 14:17

Haha! Obviously wrong year loaded! Can you email the teacher?

DominicRaabsTravelAgent · 18/09/2021 14:17

YANBU!

campion · 18/09/2021 14:17

YANBU
He'll have a head start over most 5 year olds though Grin

littlefireseverywhere · 18/09/2021 14:18

Surely these are wrong or higher ability?

BendingSpoons · 18/09/2021 14:18

We have been given a list of spellings for the year (DD just started yr1). It is the common exception words like here, me, once. That definitely sounds wrong!

rainbowstardrops · 18/09/2021 14:18

I work in year one and I'd hazard a guess that the wrong spellings have been given 😂
I'd be surprised if some of year six could spell those correctly!!!

AmyDudley · 18/09/2021 14:20

A mistake surely I would think. Does it say on the online platform what stage these spelling are for ?
Anyway I wouldn't do them - wait until you can speak to the teacher and find out what his actual spellings are. Or contact another parent in case you've been given the wrong link or something.

TheGirlWhoLived · 18/09/2021 14:21

Yeah definitely wrong. Those seem like end of y4/early y5. Conscience definitely y6! Maybe you would get one, ear, boat, love or home as tricky words depending on the phonic being shown that week. But most will be ‘get, wet, ship, shin, run, shop,’ again depending on the phonic but they all should be able to be phonetically spelt!

VladmirsPoutine · 18/09/2021 14:24

Why did you immediately log off? There's been a mistake obviously.

EatYourVegetables · 18/09/2021 14:44

I always have to spell check conscience Blush

Saltisford · 18/09/2021 14:44

They are years 5 and 6 spelling words so someone has flicked the wrong switch I think!

Bananarama21 · 18/09/2021 14:47

Ds struggled doing his spellings they were y1/y2 class and he's a y1. I wrote in his spelling book and the teacher was great he now got some flash cards to practice his sounds First.

poolsidefashion · 18/09/2021 14:50

obviously a mistake. why the dramatics/ thread?

RosieRabbit17 · 18/09/2021 14:53

These are both spellings from the Year 5/6 list so definitely an error. Contact the teacher on Monday and enquire about it.

ManifestDestinee · 18/09/2021 14:55

A simple error, not a big deal.

toughdaay · 18/09/2021 14:55

Quite clearly a mistake. Next time you log on they will probably all have changed. End of drama.

SavoyCabbage · 18/09/2021 14:56

Immediately logged off.
Well that's a relief!

QueenofLouisiana · 18/09/2021 14:57

Those are on the yr5/6 spelling list (I've taught them year in, year out since 2014!). I think that someone have assigned the spellings to the wrong year group. A quiet query should sort it out.

Peanutsandchilli · 18/09/2021 15:02

You don't really need to ask on here, do you? Surely a quick word with the teacher will tell you that someone has pressed the wrong button.

Hoppinggreen · 18/09/2021 15:04

Are you saying that your 5 year old can’t spell those yet?
Come on OP up your game a bit or they will never get into a Russell Group university

DarkDarkNight · 18/09/2021 15:10

I think there’s just been a simple mistake there. They’re very obviously not Y1 words.

My son is Y3 and his spellings this week are great, break, steak, pretty, sure, sugar and every.

shivermetimbers77 · 18/09/2021 15:15

These are the type of words my son’s school gave him in Year 1, so it may not be a mistake! I was equally shocked , he couldn’t do them at all (he was still at the cat sat on the mat stage!) and it was all a huge and stressful waste of time. Weirdly, the spellings they are getting in Year 3 are a lot easier!
