To ask for your divan bed alternatives? Box room woes.

Please help, shameless posting in AIBU for traffic.

I’m redoing DD’s tiny box room. It makes the room look far better if I can have the bed going across the room under the window rather than along the room, and also has the added advantage of being able to fit some other furniture in the room too 😁.

At the moment, she has an extendable IKEA bed on the 165cm setting, but she’s outgrowing it and would like a more ‘grown up’ bed now that she’s 11. The usable space excluding skirting boards is 191cm.

The only beds I can find that are exactly 190cm long are divan beds, which I hate with a passion. Is anyone aware of any alternatives to a divan which are definitely no longer than 190cm, ie the mattress has to fit exactly flush with the bed?

you'd need an extra 0.2cm though...

The IKEA Espevar slatted mattress base is 190cm. DS has this in the double size with the Hovag mattress and it is really comfortable. You can buy different legs or use it on the floor futon style.

The bed in an alcove so enclosed on 3 sides. Bit of a faff changing the sheets but he does it himself without too much trouble.

We’ve recently moved to a three bed, with the third bedroom being a box room.
There’s boxing in there can’t be removed, a radiator on one wall and it turns out the window is very drafty - I was going over bed types/placement a couple of months ago on another thread.

I ended up buying my 10 year old a single zinus smart frame (£60), the branded brackets to add a headboard (£11ish) and a single headboard from Amazon (£25). I’ve popped rolling storage underneath.

Google "bed base cover".

I was beyond excited when I realised I could change my beige divan to almost any colour I wanted, for £20 instead of buying a new bed!

The mattress slats stop it from sliding about (I think). We used a slightly longer, discontinued, Kallax unit we already had. We used the 174cm length one in front but would have used two shorter ones with gaps at opposite ends (hope that makes sense?). For us the gap is at the foot and there is furniture in the way so it won't ever be sat on. We toyed with using an old speaker to fill the gap, more for look than function. We used a wall of acoustic tiles as a headboard.

I'm not keen on divan beds or valances. I always use IKEA curtains because they are super easy to hem. I wonderwebbed the leftovers and tuck lengths between the base and mattress. I got the 65x65cm cushions in the same fabric so we had three things that matched. I like it so much I will do the same in a different colour in our room when we do it. I'm off to Google the base covers for inspiration.

I don't work for IKEA btw. Grin
