To think this was a bit odd?!

We moved into our house almost two years ago. We still get SO MUCH post for the previous owners. Really important stuff like bank cards, a national insurance card, UCAS letters, NHS letters etc. We kept everything for a few weeks when we first moved in, thinking they might come back and ask for it, but they never did, so since then we have just written 'Not at this address, return to sender' on everything and put it back in the postbox. We did approach both neighbours and ask if they had a forwarding address but they didn't, so we kind of figured there wasn't much more that we could do!

Fast forward almost two years, and we still get seemingly all of their post, I don't think they have changed the address on anything?! I actually had an annoying conversation with my GP surgery a few weeks ago as they are all still registered as living here, and a comment was made about the space in my house with so many people under one roof as they were a family of 6 and we are a family of 4, and it's a 3 bedroom house.

Anyway, last week there was a knock at my door, and it was the previous owners who had come to collect their post?! I said that we kept it for a while but since then everything is returned to sender because we don't have a forwarding address, but they were annoyed about it. They highlighted a few important things that they need that have been sent here and asked if I could check that we don't still have them, and were cross when I said that we don't.

AIBU to think this was a bit odd, and that it was unreasonable to expect us to have kept two years worth of post? Or have I missed something here?

YANBU. What oddballs they are.

girlmom21 · 17/09/2021 18:22

They're bonkers.

We've only recently stopped getting post for the tenants who rented from DP 7 years ago!

NuffSaidSam · 17/09/2021 18:25

No yanbu, that is absolutely insane.

GunsNShips · 17/09/2021 18:27

After two years I wouldn’t even be bothering to send it back. I’d just bin it.

ShaneTheThird · 17/09/2021 18:28

What weirdos. You are doing the right thing. We still get multiple different tenants post 3 years on including a guy who constantly has court summons sent to our flat. We have had bailiffs at the door 3 times due to them.

Susannahmoody · 17/09/2021 18:29

Madness

Sparkletastic · 17/09/2021 18:30

Crazies
In prison maybe?
On the run?

bumblebee1987 · 17/09/2021 18:31

Okay good, I am pleased that the answer is fairly unanimous!

To be honest, we do filter it now and only return important stuff. If it looks like rubbish then we bin it!

That is completely mad. Two years????

Good. I don't even keep put post. Everything is opened and dealt with on the day it arrives.

Just where were they expecting you to keep 2 years worth of post?

Brollywasntneededafterall · 17/09/2021 18:34

Maybe they are still using your address? Look on 192.
We have lived here over 6 years. Previous tenants the same. Previous owner died at 103.
We still get post for her!!
Def haven't got a forwarding address!

HopeHappy · 17/09/2021 18:38

That's definitely nuts. We've been in our house 10 years and occasionally get parcels for the old people as their idiotic children just hit "buy now" on Amazon and don't check the address.

I contact Amazon each time (as normally the delivery driver just dumps it on the doorstep and runs) and they always say to give them the chance to collect it for a couple of days then we can do what we want with it.

Unfortunately for us the contents have always been teenage tat but the local charity shop does ok out of it.

I was fed up getting post obviously from somewhere important so "accidentally" opened something one day. Contacted them, apologising profusely for opening something not meant for me but thought they should know they'd moved X years earlier and we didn't have a forwarding address. As I say it was for something important so hopefully they got a bollocking for it.

Post for a couple of weeks while you're waiting for a diversion to be set up is one thing, but two years?! Sorry for my language but there's no other way to describe them than fucking idiots!

I hope they get a £1,000 fine for not updating their records with DVLA!

RaspberryBlower99 · 17/09/2021 19:16

YANBU. If they were that bothered they should've changed addresses on the important stuff or at the very least given you a forwarding address.

TheWitchersWife · 17/09/2021 19:21

I get p60s, dental check ups, NHS appointment letters, parcels, council letters, all to my address for the old tenant. I've been here 2 and a half years. We've also had avon and hobbycraft attempt to deliver and we've had to refuse it, and they were big parcels, so how they could spend X amount of money twice and still not change their address I'll never know.
They did come down once around 6 months ago and ask for their post, and like you we had to say we refuse it and no longer keep anything for them and he seemed genuinely annoyed about it.

Not alot you can do about it but I also think its weird and rude to come to someone's house 2 years later and expect people to be hoarding their mail.

Poppydoppy18 · 17/09/2021 20:08

I think this 1%-99% is the most unanimous voting I’ve seen on MN Grin
Definitely YANBU

TheTeenageYears · 17/09/2021 20:21

It sounds almost dodgy, like they want it to appear as though they still live at the address. Even mail redirection via Royal Mail has limit on how long you can pay for the service.

Re the GP - was that the first time it was apparent to them that the previous occupants at the address were still registered? If so they should now remove them and if they added you to the address anyway they are skating on thin ice as they get paid for patients registered with them and they shouldn't be allowing multiple family registrations at the same address without checking everyone actually lives at the house.

I think so as well. Absolutely unanimous. They are bonkers!

Annoyedanddissapointed · 17/09/2021 20:38

I used to do return to sender on all the important stuff and marketing mail. Then... I started binning it. Clothes catalogue? Bin. Brown envelope from gov? Bin it. Bank letter? Bin.

Then it stopped

3scape · 17/09/2021 20:45

I got so much in an old property I got a 'not known at this address return to sender' stamp made. Saved ages

bumblebee1987 · 17/09/2021 22:35

@TheTeenageYears

It was the first time that anyone has mentioned it to us. It was a strange conversation, they asked if it was flats and I said no, so they asked if it was a houseshare, so I said no, and they said that they have a lot of people listed in one house, and asked me to confirm who lives there, which I did, and they said they have six other people listed at the same address and was I sure they didn't live there! So I said absolutely sure, it's a 3 bed semi, definitely no room for 6 other people to hide! We have had loads of NHS letters though, so I assume they must still be using our address?!

bumblebee1987 · 17/09/2021 22:38

@Poppydoppy18 - I don't think I've ever seen it so unanimous either Grin I would like to hear from the 1% though!

OP posts:
Cherrysoup · 17/09/2021 22:39

I’d write ‘Not at this address’ on every single letter. Did they give you their new address? It isn’t your problem if they can’t be arsed to re-direct their post 2 years on!

WhatAShilohPitt · 17/09/2021 22:41

YANBU and they are CFs.

Aquamarine1029 · 17/09/2021 22:43

Did you tell the fucking idiot to update his address for his post? As though you should even have to mention that. Absolute weirdos.

bumblebee1987 · 17/09/2021 22:43

@HopeHappy - Funnily enough, they have never made a mistake with parcels or Amazon! Just everything else! Haha, yes a DVLA fine is surely coming their way?!
