I need to kick her out

I don’t think I’m being unreasonable but I need advice on how to handle this situation and what to say.

Sister visiting the UK from another country. She’s mostly been staying with my parents but has come to stay with me for a couple of nights.

She is a very very heavy smoker. While she’s been here she’s been smoking outside. I know from FaceTime that when she’s in her own home she smokes inside with her head stuck out of the window. I just got up to help my toddler on the toilet and the whole of the upstairs stinks of cigarette smoke. I suspect she’s been doing this head out the window thing. I know she will deny it in the morning.

Help! What do I do/say???

Could it be going in through the upstairs window from the ground floor?

Strokethefurrywall · 17/09/2021 03:25

Just bang on the door to her room and tell her that if she smokes “out the window” again she’s out.

Not hard! How can she possibly deny it when the whole upstairs stinks?!

She's your sister. Tell her to stop it.

It's a horrible addiction, I had it for too many years and the only difference from heroin and suchlike is that it is legal and you don't get high.

Tell her right now if she does it again she's out. This is not hard.

This. Just be direct with her. My adult son tries the same. I cannot abide the smell of smoke and make him go well away from the house to smoke. Your house, your rules. No pussyfooting around.

Do you want to kick her out now or in the morning?

You're basically going to need to be really blunt. Tell her she has to leave because she's clearly putting her own comfort above your and your child's health. That's it. If she denies the smoking just say "I'm not stupid. You may be too use to it to realise, but anyone who doesn't smoke can tell you've been smoking up here. It absolutely stinks. It's a huge shame, and I'm gutted you care so little about us. But you're going to have to leave."

Workinghardeveryday · 17/09/2021 06:54

Just tell her you know she has been smoking and upstairs stinks. Tell her not to do it again.

Be blunt!! She has been so disrespectful doing it in the first place, why feel bad for saying something? I would be absolutely livid!!!!! She is being a real cf!!!!

liveforsummer · 17/09/2021 08:11

If she smokes that heavily she'll carry the smell with her anyway. It will be on her hair, skin, her luggage, her clothes and her room will smell regardless. Also very possible she's been hanging there window as well though.

NailsNeedDoing · 17/09/2021 08:13

Tell her it’s disgusting and she need to stop or go. This isn’t something where you need to worry about being tactful, your sister was really out of order. I smoke, I’ve managed never to smoke in people’s houses when I’m staying with them, but then I wouldn’t smoke inside my own either.

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 17/09/2021 08:31

Tell her that the bathroom stank of smoke and say it must be coming in through the window, you didnt realise that it would get inside the house from outside, so she needs to go down to the bottom of the garden / outside the front door where there are no open windows to smoke. Most smoking places are away from buildings because of the fire risk so it's something she will be used to. Then if it smells again you have more of an argument to say you know she is smoking in there as it cant have travelled all the way from the bottom of the garden.
