AIBU to think this long a wait for a card is ridiculous?

Barclays are issuing me with a new bank card due to a fraudulent transaction. It was ordered last Wednesday and isn't here yet. I'm told it takes 5 to 7 working days to arrive.

I can't pay for anything online and neither can I use Google pay.

Surely in this day when so many places are card only this is ridiculous? I can't pay my rent either as I can only do a card payment.

So frustrating!

Yeh I lost my bank card the other day and it’s 5 working days for a new one, I’m with you I think in this day and age it’s ridiculous to wait that long.

BycullahRoad · 14/09/2021 18:19

For occasions such as these, I have two bank accounts, two debit cards, two low limit credit cards and two wallets. So if for any reason I lose my wallet or have fraud on a card, I do have another way to make payments.

Zarene · 14/09/2021 18:22

You could open a new account with Monzo or Starling, transfer money to that account, and start buying stuff online, paying rent etc in about 15 mins.

CorrBlimeyGG · 14/09/2021 18:23

Royal Mail are still experiencing delivery delays. Assuming Barclays posted it within a reasonable time frame, I'm not sure what else they can do.

Good suggestion by Bycullah, if you're able to, get a second account or emergency credit card.

Mumsnut · 14/09/2021 18:23

I found someone's debit card the other day. Couldn't find any way of notifying the bank - the live chat was actually a robot and didn't comprehend; you had to have an account with them to get through on the phone.

The nearest branch was well over an hour away, and the nearest cop shop wasn't much closer. I just cut it up in the end.

StarryStarrySocks · 14/09/2021 18:24

I don't think it's that long given the processes the bank will have in place plus delivery time. But it must be frustrating if you have no other way of paying for things.

Blueeilidh · 14/09/2021 18:27

I'm with HSBC and it took 3 days last week to get a new one.

Sleeplessem · 14/09/2021 18:57

Your unable to do a bank transfer for rent? Seems odd. 5/7 days is pretty standard for something to be posted out to you. That’s not really the banks fault, it’s just how long things take to post. Would it have been quicker to order it into branch and get it from there?

I think sometimes people have unrealistic expectations of banks, they think they have the capabilities of Amazon prime but they don’t

Lockheart · 14/09/2021 18:58

I've had a similar thing with Barclays in the past and my new card turned up within a couple of days - have they said why it's taking longer than usual?

olidora63 · 14/09/2021 19:00

I had to order MBNA card and I got it within 48 hrs!

Thoughtcontagion · 14/09/2021 19:01

I’m with Halifax and it’s linked to my Apple Pay when they issue new one it becomes available on my phone before the physical card arrives was like magic. Also NatWest allow you into the bank to get money out. I’m sure Barclays would if you took ID.

Metro print them there and then

Obviously not helpful to you right now

leiaskye · 14/09/2021 19:02

Think you need a new bank. My daughter lost her Halifax card last week. Reported it Friday, new one arrived this morning.

TractorAndHeadphones · 14/09/2021 19:03

took me 2 days the last time I needed a new card. Have you tried the live chat - they’ll told you whether it’s been posted

goldierocks · 14/09/2021 19:04

OP - have you signed up for internet banking? You can log in with your bank account number and sort code, you don't need a card number. You could then pay your rent via bank transfer?

If I were in your position (victim of bank fraud) I would definitely make sure I had a 'plan B' (internet banking, PAYG visa, 2nd account) etc. just in case a similar thing happened again.

Dogscanteatonions · 14/09/2021 19:05

I'm afraid my credit rating is poor due to a exh going bankrupt and a huge amount of debt being left for me to deal with so opening another bank account isn't a possibility - I might get rejected and that would impact the credit score I'm trying to improve.

Annoyingly the new cards details show in my backing app but I can't use the Barclays backing app to pay - I just tried and it doesn't work. If I posted something with a first class stamp it would have been here by now!

I do think in this day and age they need to address how long this takes, it can be really hard just using cash anymore.

Re. the rent - I can only pay with a card online so tried to phone them up to see about bank transfer and I was on hold through my whole lunch break then had to give up!

I’m with Halifax and it’s 5 working days, I waited 5 working days for mine so she must have been lucky

ancientgran · 14/09/2021 19:06

I'm with firstdirect, they spotted a dodgy transaction and phoned me to check, it was fraudulent. I had new card 3 days later.

Redgeraniums · 14/09/2021 19:16

Weird you pay rent on a card. What if you forget! Don’t you just do it by DD.

It’s insanely dangerous I would think. For exactly this reason.

Anyway call them, it sounds like it might be lost

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 14/09/2021 19:18

Definetly get the rent onto direct debit.

Sleeplessem · 14/09/2021 19:21

Think you need to sign up for online banking OP and the app.

Barclays have a digital eagles program to help with digital engagement. Save you calling up on the future x

I pay out by card as I'm paying off some arrears after losing a lot of work during covid - so each month I pay my rent plus as much of the arrears I can afford

I have online banking - it won't work at the moment, it says contactless is enabled but it was refused twice when I tried to pay with my phone earlier. I also have Google pay but that won't work either

Barclays send out cards in 24 hours so the delay is going to be with Royal Mail I’m afraid.

If you can get to a branch some of them (not many of them so check first) have card printing machines so you could get one immediately.
