What do I need to have done before the movers arrive on Thursday?

We're letting our current place so I have arranged for the washer/dryer and the oven to be professionally cleaned. The full 'start of tenancy clean' will take place a couple of days before the tenants move in.

I need to get keys cut

I need to defrost the freezer

And then I draw a blank...

Please help!

You sound pretty prepared!
If you haven’t already you also need to let your utility companies know you’re moving, and do meter readings on the day you move out.

Perfect, thanks.

Thanks. We have an agent doing all this.

I'm more thinking about what I need to do for our move! I don't feel at all prepared

Ah, brilliant.

I will say that you should be prepared that they pack everything with very little discrimination. So if there’s rubbish you think “Surely they’ll throw that away…” just bin it now. Because they’ll pack it!

NoSquirrels · 13/09/2021 19:43

If there’s things you don’t want them to pack - if you want to put some stuff in your own car, then make sure you have a spot for that or a system - PostIt notes or whatever.

Where are you moving to? Is everything sorted on that end?

New house is vacant and ready.

Do I pack my underwear myself?! I've never had packers before.

I've just done the electoral role stuff as we're moving to another city.

Registered with new drs, and new nursery.

I don't know how to defrost a freezer..

At its most basic, defrosting a freezer is just empty it of frozen goods, switch it off at the plug, open the door and stick a load of towels down.

Buy lots of cans of fizzy drinks and biscuits to bribe packets with.

If you don’t want them touching your underwear (or anything else) pack it yourself, yes.

Ok cool, thanks.

Need to work out where the plug to the freezer is

Redirect your post.

Whether you've got movers or not, pack a box with stuff you'll need to make dinner and get to bed the first night, and clothes for the first couple of days.

Cancel/transfer other utility type things - broadband or tv subscription

KickAssAngel · 13/09/2021 20:01

yes - pack enough essentials (food, medicine, clothes, paperwork) for a few days and keep them with you. Even the best movers won't get everything into the right place where you can find it.

ShaunaTheSheep · 13/09/2021 20:33

Keys (car, house, anything else)
Paperwork
Chargers
Medication
Tech and phones

Get a big bag or box to throw stuff into, label it STAY in big letters and shove it in the car before the packers arrive. Put the car keys in your pocket.

Photograph condition of items incase of damage by movers

621CustardCream438 · 13/09/2021 21:32

If your clothes are in drawers, they’ll just move the whole drawer, they won’t pack your clothes (or in our case, they’ll lift the entire drawer unit like it’s no heavier than a phone directory!).

Clean stuff like the toaster of crumbs, empty the bins, throw/hide the loo brush and hide anything you don’t want packed in your car - packers are like a swarm of locusts. Fast, efficient, and entirely non discriminatory about what they pack. Crumbs, full bins, a solitary biscuit in a packet…. All gets boxed. Do not leave your car keys, wallet, phone, medication etc around - they will pack it.

Speakuptomakeyourselfheard · 13/09/2021 21:38

Make sure that any valuables are locked safely away ideally in your handbag or something else that is clearly marked DO NOT PACK!! I stupidly left our dogs crate by the front door thinking it would go in the car before the movers turned up. Then moving day arrived, went to put the dog in the car, no crate! Yep! They'd packed it, and it was one of the first things on the truck as we'd left it by the back door. I stupidly thought they'd ask before packing something like that, but never having had a company pack for us before, didn't know what to expect, so had to then go into town to buy another crate!
