Why is it that women still have to wear tennis skirts or skorts in tennis? Why is it ok ?

They don’t have to. Not even at Wimbledon which has famously strict rules on clothing.

NutellaEllaElla · 12/09/2021 11:38

Well that de escalated quickly Grin

Lockheart · 12/09/2021 11:38

This. Martina Navratilova wore shorts at Wimbledon for years.

Best thread I have read on here - can I nominate for classics Grin

iklboo · 12/09/2021 11:40

Nice try.

Unfashionable · 12/09/2021 11:40

They don’t. They can basically wear whatever they want, (as long as it’s white at Wimbledon). Martina used to play in shorts toward the end of her career.

Flowerlane · 12/09/2021 11:41

A quick google would have told you that they didn’t have to 🙄

vodkaredbullgirl · 12/09/2021 11:41

None starter

Cactu · 12/09/2021 11:43

Why do they wear the skirt though? It not even really a skirt, just a bit of flappy material over their shorts. No point to it other than they like the way it looks I suppose.

Mumoftwoinprimary · 12/09/2021 11:44

This article gives the Wimbledon requirements. www.google.co.uk/amp/s/metro.co.uk/2018/07/13/can-female-tennis-players-wear-shorts-wimbledon-wear-skirts-7711535/amp/

I found it really strange watching the US Open final last night and them not being in white. (I’m not a tennis fan but usually watch a bit of Wimbledon.)

MrsSkylerWhite · 12/09/2021 11:45

They don’t.

They don't have to. Even at Wimbledon all players may wear shorts.

Most female players choose skirts. Maybe because a tennis skirt with lycra shorts underneath or attached is actually more comfortable and less restrictive of movement. (I imagine they might feel a bit too exposed in the lycra hotpants alone.)

sashagabadon · 12/09/2021 11:46

I like tennis skirts! I think tennis generally has the best outfits of all the sports.

Shadedog · 12/09/2021 11:47

Queen Martina double shorting

Are you coming back OP? Grin

seaandsandcastles · 12/09/2021 11:55

What’s wrong with wearing skirts? Confused

Antsinyourpanta · 12/09/2021 11:59

I'm pretty sure serena Williams wore leggings or a catsuit once.

Unlike the rest of us who wear practical sackcloth overalls

I remember reading a glosswitch article ages ago about some rich famous man (bill gates or similar) who announced that he would be wearing the same suit/shirt/tie combo for work (and possibly everywhere) forever because it was practical and glossy was “aye, right, it’s not actually as practical as a easycare jersey dress and ballet flats for the office. You wear it because you look good and like the image it projects.”

It’s always fine for old blokes to wear things that “coincidently” look nice though, 18yo girls, well, they must just be vacuous.

Dd1 plays hockey in a skort. She prefers skorts to shorts as they look nicer. Not the same as it’s an actual team strip but if she had the choice of picking her own clothes like tennis players or gymnasts do she would pick a skort. It’s the cultural norm in that environment, it’s practical, it looks nice. It’s fine to want to look nice.
