To cringe when someone texts 'how do I look'?

My sister/certain friends often text me a picture of themselves dressed up with the caption 'how do I look?' Of course I think they look lovely but the caption makes me cringe and I feel that they are just fishing for compliments which I give through gritted teeth.

Fair enough if they put up a picture on social media that I can freely comment on or if I'm actually on a night out with them I can compliment their outfit/make up/hair whatever. But receiving that type of message kind of forces me to say something and then I feel disingenuous.

AIBU?

They are probably looking for reassurance and genuinely appreciate your opinion I.think it's less cringy than filtered SM pictures

I think that’s fine personally, sometimes friends and I will send pictures to each other in a choice of outfits for example and ask which looks best… I don’t think this is much different? Why would you not want to tell your friend that they look nice?

Now, now I never said that did I? I think there is a difference - a difference between 'I can't choose between these two outfits, which one is best' and 'I'm ready, how do I look' every couple of weeks.

Some need approval more than oxygen. 😁

"Fabulous as always darling"

"To me you are always gorgeous because I love you. I don't honestly know whether you are looking better today than usual."

"You look happy! Going somewhere nice?"

FuckingFabulous · 11/09/2021 23:07

I'd just answer with 'Ok' or 'Fine'

Those fishing for a gushing 'omg bb u look stunninggggggggg!!!' will not continue to cast their bait in your waters!

I wonder if women seeking approval for looks tell quite a few fibs to each other.

The perfect example are the how old do I look posts that crop up on MN there are some very over generous comments.

I can see why it’s irritating for you to be bothered and it’s a shame they feel they need approval but as this is an anonymous forum, do you really tell the truth?

I have a select couple of friends I ask if I’m trying something new or if I’m not sure if my outfit works, I trust them to be honest and appreciate their opinion!

They are most probably not secure in their appearance and want reassurance from someone they trust, but who they also believe will be kind to them. In this way they are similar to the vast majority of the female population, most of us worry about our appearance far more than we should, for a variety of reasons we shouldn't be blamed for. Most women are quite happy to boost other women with positive comments about how they look. How much does it cost you to pay someone a compliment that may make them feel better about themselves?

I'd never lie to a friend. If my opinion was asked at a point where they could change something i thought looked bad, I'd say so. If it was too late, for example we were already out, I'd compliment what I could. I've never seen anyone look so awful theres not some aspect I couldn't truthfully be positive about. And I think for every flattering guess on the how old threads, you get a really spiteful one, so I think some women are overly kind, some are honest and others just cruel.
SeriouslyISuppose · 12/09/2021 10:28

Literally nobody in my life has ever done this. If they started, I’d probably think they’d had a knock to the head.

Why, would that affect how someone looks to you? Hmm
nokidshere · 12/09/2021 10:36

I don't know why you would give this much thought. Just reply 'very nice, where you off too'? It takes 10 seconds, you made her happy and doesn't affect you in the slightest.
