What would you do if someone was spreading nasty rumours about you at work. Tried speaking to them about it on the phone, they denied it, talked over me and hung up

I would go to my union rep or HR.

Firstly you need to make sure you are right and it's coming from them. Definite evidence. Not 'Sue told me she heard from x'.

Because that just becomes he said she said.

Then make a formal complaint.

Though you have to be prepared for them to say they didn't start it, they just heard it and told someone else.

@lockdownalli I have reported it to the area team but they were very dismissive, the they that nothing will come of an investigation. I have said that all I want is for the person doing it to be told that his behaviour is not acceptable. I have been made to feel that I am wasting their time and being petty

Get evidence, speak to line manager or HR.

So you have already raised with HR? That should have been in the OP really as you will get loads of replies advising that Grin

OK, you will have to raise a formal grievance then.
